In my opinion and I can assure you it is one that is shared amongst most collectors I know, this watch is considered to be one of the finest railroad watches ever made. Maybe even the best made by an American founded company. It was kept in a WW2 veteran’s safe for years in the back of a closet. Now I feel it is time to go to someone who can truly appreciate it. I will entertain reasonable offers. No scratches or cracks in crystal face. First manufactured in 1941. Very low serial number. This watch was produced in 1947. Thats only 6 years into production! That’s out of almost 30k that where produced during that period that they where manufactured. On the inside of the back of the case is etched “10k gold filled”. The porcelain dial is white and features black Arabic numbers with a subsidiary seconds dial upon the sixth hour. Below the twelve hour it states “Hamilton 23 Jewels Railway Special”. Upon opening the back you will see that the movement is presented on a bridge plate and is engraved Hamilton Watch Co U. A”, “950B 23 Jewels”, serial number “S4538″, and “ADJ. Each gold gear and Ruby balance stone shines as bright as it did the day it left Hamilton’s show room floor. It has and forever will stand the test of time. This has the lowest serial number on the market at the moment! Keep that in mind. Price reflects this fact. Shows wear consistent with use. As far as know this case only works for the 910, I know a 912 will not fit properly, not sure about the rest of the Hamilton 12 size movements. C1902 Hamilton 940 18 Size 21 Jewels. Cosmetically Extra Fine Dial & Movement (see Pictures). Good Timekeeping see Testing. The Hamilton 940 grade pocket watch was for many years the company’s centerpiece watch for the Railway Market. It featured “Extra Fine Ruby Jewels, Patent Motor Barrel, Adjusted to Temperature & Isochronism and 5 Positions, Double Roller Escapement and a Micrometric Regulator”. Lids screw on & off correctly. Crystal is scratch free. The gold train & jewel setting movement is clean with No discoloration and has no service tool marks. The engine turning decoration pattern is all intact. The gold letter filling is all there with no imperfections. All setting and winding functions work positively and correctly. Dial is exceptional and has 1 hard to see hairline at 1:00. The watch was observed running and carried in a pocket for 24 hours; the last 8 hours resting on a desk. The watch lost 10 seconds during the 24 hour hours. Further regulation of the watch I’m sure would improve it’s accuracy even more. I have no history of the watch and assume that it’s due for professional serving and adjustments.
