Broken Chronometer Running Pocket Watch Harman HXF 44mm Case 17j Vintage. The chronometer function is not working, the watch itself runs and keeps good time (I haven’t checked it for +/- accuracy but it keeps good time, at least over 24 hours the time isn’t noticeably off anyway). Case is 44mm wide. When the chronometer is started the sweep hand moves for about 5 seconds at most then stalls and ticks back and forth a tiny bit. After stopping the chronometer, the minute/sweep chronometer hands don’t usually return to 12 o’clock (and also I noticed many times when you start the chronometer the minute hand in the top dial advance suddenly to 4-5 o’clock position or other off position). You can get the hands to align if you start/stop/return the hands but they typically don’t align at 12 o’clock. Observing the movement I see that the seconds/sweep hand function is from the gear in the center of the movement (just to the left of the Harman Watch Co engraving). I think it is missing a jewel at that top post point (or missing whatever kept that top gear post in place). I had very carefully using a small plastic pointed tool gently guided that gear to stay as centered as possible and found that the chronometer sweep hand advanced, and it is clear that the gear is not secured at the top post. As far as the hands not returning to zero I don’t know what would cause that. The movement itself reminds me of how a wrist watch chronometer movement would appear. The stainless steel case has denting on the back. It snaps open/closed and is hinged, the snap feels like it’s wearing out (it stays closed but takes almost no effort to open). The front is snap off. In this listing we have this terrific 1920s Robert Cart Platinum UltraThin Cushion Case Pocket Watch with top grade’Extra Superior’ 19j movement. Robert Cart was one of the best makers of UltraThin pocket watches in the early part of 20th Century with the likes of Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Touchon etc. It was known to have made base movements for Vacheron and Breguet. This particular pocket watch up for sale is for sure one of the best products of Robert Cart having a beautifully made Platinum Open Faced Case made in highly unique cushion shaped case. The movement inside is as fine as they come for a Swiss watch from early 20th Century, justified by the’Extra Superior’ marking. We can see Robert Cart marked on the movement as well as with the RC plus star triangle hallmark. There is also Robert Cart signature inside the caseback, and the platinum Chamois hallmark was punched 3 times. Condition-wise the watch is running and appears to operate normally. However, we have not serviced the watch so we do not guarantee timekeeping accuracy or longevity. Cosmetically the silver dial has some tarnish/discoloration marks/specks as well as tarnish to the outer rail chapter. The case has usual scratches and without significant defect. The glass crystal has two corners with chips. Total weight is 53.2g, dimension is 44x44mm.
