Verge pocket watch, silver pair cases, champleve dial – London, c1700. Charles Mason, London, c1700. Silver pair cases, 56 mm. A large, early English verge with original champleve dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot.. Four crested tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. In good condition and working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, in very good condition. Signed Mason, London on the central disc. Good early 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks. In reasonable condition, with a few light bruises. The pendant has been reattached and heavily reinforced around the neck. The bow is a replacement. There is a small hole in the back , near the winding aperture, where there would have originally been a small sliding cover to this aperture. The hinge and the high dome crystal are fine and the bezel closes but does not snap shut. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case. Again with no hallmarks. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. The catch button has been filled with a gemstone diamond? This watch is probably by Charles Mason, recorded in London from 1687, apprenticed to Michael Bird. Verge Fusee with Chatelaine and Matching Outer Protectors Case Pocket Watch England; John Georg Buson; Mans; Circa: 1750 COMPLICATIONS: Early verge CASE: The sterling silver/nickel 10-size, 45mm, 5 ½ long, swing-out case features floral, barleycorn, geometric, repousse, and cherub decorations. DIAL: This white porcelain dial displays Roman numerals and spade hands. MOVT: This key-set movement with verge fusee escapement, is gilt, with a full plate layout, and is signed. CONDITION: C 3 (Case is in Very Good Condition) D 3-46 Dial is in Very Good Condition – chip(s) or hairline(s) under the bezel, not visible when closed M 3 (Movement is in Very Good Condition) R 8 (Rarity on a scale of #1 being very common to #10 being extremely rare). This watch is a verge fusee pocket watch. Verge fusees were popular from the 1600s through the mid 1800s. Even when new, these watches were not exact time keepers; and now that the watch is at least over 200 years old, we do not guarantee that this watch will keep time. We do guarantee that the watch does run when wound and will run for a period of hours. A special fusee housed in an exciting chatelaine, with outer case. A great watch and collector item. Chatelaine Chatelaine refers to the ornamental clasp worn at a waist, attached to a belt or girdle, with a hook-plate from which the watch is suspended. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Full Plate A plate (or disc) that covers the works and supports the wheels pivots. There is a top plate, a bottom plate, half, and 3/4 plate. The top plate has the balance resting on it. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Milden Liverpool Verge Fusee Pocket Watch in Hallmarked Silver Case. What you see is what you get. These items have not seen the light of day in over 40 years. We are not experts in the field and make no claim to condition or function of the watches and other parts. Marked Milden Liverpool N1000 and has a serial number on the movement of 73208. Measures 48mm at the dial. The case is unmarked except for hallmarks shown. Case diameter is 51.5mm. These type watches are difficult to precisely attribute. It is known that the bosley type regulator on the watch was not commonly used until after 1820. Similar movements with same case & markings (AP sponsor hallmark especially) have been found with papers showing Arthur Pitts Jr, Watch and Clock Maker, Middleborough Ma as the importer/finisher. Verge Fusee Pocket Watch 1780 by J. Verge Fusee watch by J Wilders for parts or repair. The top hinge is a little loose but still has it’s bull nose crystal. The dial has roman numerals and a lovely town scene with two men taking a walk by a bridge. The movement is signed and the case has the silver marks for London, 1780. Case measures about 42mm across. A very nice older Verge pocket watch with Tortoise Shell pair case by William Flagg of London. The movement is very clean and running strongly with a healthy tick for the full length of the fusee chain. I have checked it over 24 hours and it is running about 50 minutes fast which I think is acceptible for being circa 200+ years old. As you can see the m/ment top hinge is broken (parts in box) so care has to be taken when opening the front cover. Could possibly be repaired or a new hinge block made. The outer case measures 53mm diameter approx and looks to be made from some kind of bronze. It has polished up very well and looks just like gold. Looking at the interior of the inner case shows that it has been gold gilded when new. Rare to have them available with a Tortoise Shell covering but as you can see it has had some repairs in the past. The white ceramic dial is in fair condition with Black Arabic numerals and gold hands. It has a high dome crystal glass which is clear and in good condition. I have tried to describe it as honestly as possible but if there are any questions please send me a message. Overseas buyers please note that I can only insure for a max. Of 250 GB Pounds. A large, early English verge with original champleve dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced winged balance cock, showing birds and a mask at the neck. Four crested tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. In good condition and working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with gilt centre, in very good condition. Signed MEYER on the central disc, which also features a lion and unicorn under a crown and above a mask. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks but makers mark SB (crowned). In good condition, with just a few light bruises. The pendant has been reattached and with the bow are later replacements. The hinge and the high dome crystal are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with large square hinge (7 sleeves). Again with no hallmarks. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. Some small bruises throughout. The Lion and Unicorn form the coat of arms of the British monarch (hence the crown) so this watch was probably made in London, around 1700. The makers mark on the inner case may be for Samuel Bowtell, whose marks (with and without the crown) have been seen on cases between about 1690 and 1710.
