Nice Gilt Verge Fusee Pocket Watch Outer Case Only + Paper 18th Century (K21). Please see photographs for condition and size and weight. Nice antique case, unsure of age but could be late 18th century or early 19th Century. Date written on the back of the paper is for 1846 by John Dickman of Edinburgh who was a chronometer maker. Good British verge fusee pocket watch in silver pair case. Diameter of outer case is 55mm, thickness is 32mm. Nice champleve dial and movement are signed by Massy London. Cuss in his book “The English Watch” shows the watch similarly signed by Maßsy p. 146, attributing it to Henry Massy about 1710. It’s worth to note, that his father, Nicholas Massy, French born (Blois) French Huguenot, emigrated to London about 1680, he became member of Clockmaking company in 1682 and died at 1698. Cuss, cock with D-shaped leg, steel balance wheel, barrel with endless worm stopwork. It can be dated to 1710s. The movement is not numbered, as well as the watch illustrated by Cuss. Condition The watch appears to be in ok condition. Movement appears to be in good running condition and works in every position. Champleve silver dial is in good condition. Inner Case is in good condition with some period wear. Outer case has old crack and soldering near the top of back cover. Dial: White Porcelain, double sunken dial, no hairlines, a few chips in second hand circle. Crystal is in good condition. Case: gold filled open face case. The bow is nice and tight. The case shows light normal pocket wear. Both front & back covers open to 90 degrees and close with a good tight seal. I opened the covers using a case opening knife. A very nice older Verge pocket watch with Tortoise Shell pair case by William Flagg of London. The movement is very clean and running strongly with a healthy tick for the full length of the fusee chain. I have checked it over 24 hours and it is running about 50 minutes fast which I think is acceptible for being circa 200+ years old. As you can see the m/ment top hinge is broken (parts in box) so care has to be taken when opening the front cover. Could possibly be repaired or a new hinge block made. The outer case measures 53mm diameter approx and looks to be made from some kind of bronze. It has polished up very well and looks just like gold. Looking at the interior of the inner case shows that it has been gold gilded when new. Rare to have them available with a Tortoise Shell covering but as you can see it has had some repairs in the past. The white ceramic dial is in fair condition with Black Arabic numerals and gold hands. It has a high dome crystal glass which is clear and in good condition.
