Pocket Watch Case

Beautiful big and solid pair cased verge fusee onion watch, circa 1700. Signed by Fromantel & Clarke. Both inner and outer cases are made of solid 22k gold. This watch was probably produced for French clientele, outer case is decorated with arabesques in style of French Louis XIV onions. Watch is very nice, high quality piece. It also features date indication. The movement made in manner of 1700s, features beautiful pierced & engraved cock with D-shaped leg, tulip pillars, steel balance bridge. Fromanteel & Clarke Ahasuerus I Fromanteel was member of Blacksmith company in 1630 and member of Clockmaking Company in 1632. He was the first, who introduced pendulum clocks in England. His son, Ahasuerus II became member of Clockmaking Company in 1663. In 1680, Ahasuerus II Fromanteel moved from London to Amsterdam, where he started in 1693 patnership with his son-in-law, Christopher Clarke. Ahasuerus II Fromanteel died in 1703, but Clarke used this signature till 1720. Please note, that watch is big and thick, much larger than pair cases watches of mid-XVIII. The weight only the two cases are about 77 grams, total weight is 156 grams. Diameter of outer case is 56mm, thickness is 30mm. Condition The porcelain dial in Dutch style is in good condition with couple of tiny, hardly visible imperfections – near center and the spring that locks movement in case. Movement is in running condition, works in every position, but I don’t guarantee time keeping. Case is in good condition, though engraving is worn in the center, as you can see on the photos.
