Pocket Watch Case

Cased American 10ct Gold Hour & Quarter Repeater Pocket Watch. The watch face has a white face with black numerals, blued steel hands and subsidiary seconds dial. The side lever chimes the number of hours. We would date it to around 1900/1920. The gold has a subtle rose tone. On the inside of the outer lid there is a set of marks… “10C” for 10 carat gold “CJ” for a makers mark The serial no. The inside leaf of the watch opens to reveal the mechanism and another set of 10 carat hallmarks. The inside of the watch is simple and elegant. It has beautiful ruby bearings which contrasts with the gold. A sales case is included, it has a blue tooled leather exterior. On the reverse of the case lid is the a retailers name and address Jewellers H&A. Davis 173 High St North EAST HAM. It is a top wind model with suspension loop. To set the hours, depress the button in the one o’clock position and use the top wind. To activate the striking repeater chime, the lever in the nine o’clock position needs to be raised. This chimes the number of hours followed by a double chime for each quarter hour. Condition The watch is in perfect working order, it keeps good time and strikes well. The gold has picked up very light surface wear. The face and hands are immaculate but the replacement perspex’glass’ has a small crack in the left hand side, near to the numeral 7 and 2. The box is in average condition with wearing signs. The colour has faded in different places, especially on the margins. Dimensions The watch with its suspension ring is 3 inches (6.6 cm) high. The actual watch body has a diameter of 2 inches (5.2 cm). The watch weighs 63.7g. The box is 4 x 3.4 inches (10 x 8 cm). GENTS ENGLISH SILVER, CHAMPLEVE DIAL VERGE FUSEE PAIR CASE POCKET WATCH. IN GOOD CONDITION AND GOOD STRONG RUNNING ORDER. A fine early English key wound and set silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch. The Verge, chain driven fusee movement is signed Duchene London, It has square side pillars, a finely pierced balance cock incorporating foliate and grotesque face mask and a finely pierced cock foot, a polished flat steel three arm undersprung balance and a large silver Tompion disc regulator (disc numbered 10-25). The silver champleve dial has a Roman numeral hour chapter and an Arabic numeral minute chapter, the dial is maker signed at it’s centre and has beetle and poker hands. The outer plain polished English silver case has a push button catch release opener with a button return back spring. The inner plain polished English silver case has a hinge opening front bezel containing the high dome glass crystal and a winding hole at the rear. Both silver cases are unhallmarked, this is normal to find on early English silver watch cases, as it was not until May 1739 that the british parliament introduced an act making it an offence not to have them. The outer case measures 54.5mm (approx 2.1 inch) in diameter from left to right and the combined weight of cases and movement is 114 grammes (4ozs). The verge movement has been checked for time keeping and is exceptionally accurate for age to within 2-3 minutes during a 24hrs period. Both the movement, dial and cases are without any signs of modifications or later changes. Couldn’t really find any info on this particular watch maker one theory being duchene is an alternative way to spell duchesne, its a very fine quality English verge movement so makes me think the maker must have served their time as a member of the clock makers company.
