A beautiful solid silver gents pair cased pocket watch with a Masonic Painted Dial. It will date by the London hallmarks to circa 1817 and made by J. Crofswell, also of London. The English Verge movement with Fusee chain drive has nice bright original gold gilding as it has recently been serviced, (cleaned and oiled). It it running with a good balance swing for a 200 year old watch and has been keeping good time over the past few days lying on my desk. There is a winding and setting key included. The larger than normal solid silver pair case measures 60mm diameter approx. Both cases are in very good condition with strong hinges and all covers close well. It has a beautifully painted Masonic dial with black Roman numerals. The solid gold “hand made” hands are possibly original with a clear high dome “bulls eye” crystal glass. Silver pair cased verge pocket watch, mock pendulum – London, c1700. Silver pair cases, 57.25 mm. Mock pendulum verge movement. A large London verge, with fine and rare mock pendulum movement. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock and plate, engraved regulator disk and four square pillars. The balance cock table is cut out to reveal a mock pendulum bob, which is attached to the 2 spoke balance wheel. In exceptionally good complete condition, with the the gilding still bright, and the movement running well. DIAL : Fine, original, silver champleve dial, signed in the centre Patrick, London. All in good condition with no excessive rubbing or wear. Nice original early 18th century blued steel hands. INNER CASE : Silver with makers mark rubbed. Damage around the neck, where the pendant has been replaced, and the inside strengthened. The hinge has been repaired on the bezel, and the rim of the case is slightly distorted. The high dome crystal has no chips or cracks, but surface scratches. However the bezel does snap shut securely. OUTER CASE : Silver , with no marks. Excellent condition throughout, with just some tiny bruises. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine, and the case snaps shut correctly. The inner case is slightly distorted so is not a perfect fit for the movement or outer case. It is possibly a replacement case, though the outer is probably original. Both are of the correct period for the movement. The inner case requires some repair and when strengthened and shaped correctly will provide a better fit for both movement and outer. Antique William Glover Patinated Case Verge Fusee Pocket Watch. Antique brass and ttshll. Pair-case verge fusee pocket watch, signed by William Glover and made in London circa 1750. The watch is in excellent conservation state and working order. The brass outer case is veneered with real patinated ttshll. With fine vegetal motifs and a butterfly. The inner case is made of gilt brass, with knuckle hinged inner case. The cuvette is engraved for an owner. The long-stemmed pendant with ovoid bow dates to the mid-18th century. There is an undefined logo on the inside of a cover. The dial is white with black Roman numerals, minute ring with Arabic markers every 5 minutes. It includes Beetle & Poker type metal hands. The movement is a verge fusee type, with plates separated by tapered baluster pillars. The vegetal-inspired ornaments are typical of the mid/late 18th century. The bridge is engraved with a faun’s mask, a popular design in the mid-18th century. The plate is hand engraved with the inscription Wm. Glover, London in beautiful cursive script, accompanied by the serial number. It belongs to the watch maker William Glover, who began business before 1750 and went bankrupt in 1756. Precisely because William Gliver was active for such a short time, his watches, today, are very rare and scarce. This beautiful verge fusee watch with double brass and ttshll. Antique Tarts Triple-Case Verge Fusee Silver Pocket Watch. Antique fantastic silver triple-case verge fusee with pocket watch with calendar, made in London by the watchmaker John Tarts, circa 1889 for the Dutch market and in excellent conservation state and working order. The watch has three cases; the outer case is hinged and covered in fish skin (I think ray fish) with pique designs in the form of a navigational star, using the white metal pins from the underlying metal case. Enclosed is a sterling-silver repousse case with a mythological scene, surrounded by large C scrolls which also decorate the two-part barrel of this inner case. The inside of the back cover contains a Dutch watch paper advertising Ryn (Reiner) Van Vlymen, watchmaker of Amsterdam. The inner case of polished-sterling silver has English hallmarks on the inside of the back cover: The Leopard with a crown (London Assay office prior to 1822), the lion Guardant (Sterling silver) and the Date Letter mark of the lower case, d for 1779. There is a JC mark for the unidentified case maker. The watch mounts a silvered-champlevé dial with Roman hour chapter ring, gilt rosette half hour markers, arcaded minute track (in the Dutch manner) and Arabic markers in oval cartouche form, placed every five minutes along the periphery of the dial. There is an aperture over the six, gilt Beetle & Poker hands and the dial center engraved with the manufacturers name, TARTS, and with repousse silver cherub and grotesque facial mask as well as scroll-work. The watch has a gilt full plate, verge escapement, fusee movement with square tapered baluster pillars with rounded bases, open pierced foliate decorations attached to the rear plate edges, pierced Balance Bridge engraved with scrolling foliage in the style of curled acanthus leaves. The balance cock is attached with screws at two winged brass ends. There is a stepped foot the width of the bridge. The balance wheel has three arms. The rear plate bears the engraved inscription TARTS, London 2318. Tarts (John) was probably a fictitious name and may actually have been J. Stratton (John), who worked in London as a watchmaker at the last third of the 18th century and trained his son James in 1791. “Tarts” was a prolific maker of repoussé silver pair case watches in the Dutch style. If talking about antique machines, most of them are in perfect working conditions, perfect conservation state or perfectly restored. The few that are not, because it was not possible to repair it, it’s clearly indicated. I like to work with the best pieces that I can find. I prefer to work only with selected pieces. Selected’ doesnt mean’unaffordable’. My pieces have very correct prices, depending on the rarity and the conservation state of the piece itself. Every piece has a price rank, from junk state to museum state, that I consider is the highest one. Selected means that I prefer to work with Museum State pieces, or near, and First Class collectors items, or near rather than other kind of low quality pieces. We guarantee the description and datation of all our pieces. I always give guarantee my descriptions, not only in general antiques, but even in the working condition of an antique machine. Of course, to be completely sincere, its mainly impossible to give a full guarantee in the working condition of an antique working machine with over or more than 100 years. Many things can happen inside an antique mechanism and todays perfectly working spring, could be the futures failure as far away as in ten years or as near as the next month. If necessary, we restore and/or repair and finally clean and/or adjust, all our antique machines, and if its there’s a defect or malfunctions, its clearly indicated in the description, video or pictures. We try to have all our pieces in perfect working conditions, but if a disaster occurs and the item gets out of order or damaged, for any reason, we can help to solve the problem or to help to repair it or to restore it. We work with first class professionals that can restore from antique medieval paintings to 13th Century silver, other metals as iron, copper and bronze, to any kind of wood.
