Superb 1798 Sterling Silver Pair Cased Verge Fusee Pocket Watch. Signed John Bent of Liverpool. English Sterling Silver Pair cases are hall marked with the letter “a” 1798, The Lion for Sterling. 925, the Anchor for Birmingham. White porcelain dial with Gold hands. Dial is almost perfect without any visible hairlines. The hands are gold and perfect. High Domed Bulls Eye crystal clear and unblemished. All Case Covers open, close and fit together with nice hinges and push Button. Key wind and key set with key included. The Movement sounds good with a nice tick. It has 4 sub dials featuring the month, day, date and moonphase, together with seconds hand. I have tested the watch and all functions are working, each one has its own press button for setting, these are also working. These change automatically when the watch is running. The watch is running fast (about 15 minutes a day) and could certainly do with some regulation and fine tuning. Beautiful ornate ivory coloured dial with four sub dials and a total of six hands. The general condition is very good with just a very small chip on the sub seconds dial. Excellent solid silver two tone Swiss hallmarked triple hinge ornate case. This is a very attractive and well made case in excellent condition without any dents or scratching. Stamped with the silver quality 0.800 the diameter size is 50mm and 71mm if you include the bow. 16 size 23 jewel open face lever-set Bunn Special Grade 163 pocket watch. Beautiful example cased in a superb white gold-filled Bunn Special Model 107 case with distinctive “pagoda” style bow. Watch is fronted by a double-sunk enamel bold Arabic numeral dial with outward facing arrows at the 5-minute positions. Movement features gold jewel settings, gold balance screws, gold train wheels, rayed pattern nickel damaskeen, and 60 hour mainspring. Serial number is 5375214. The entire case has flowers covering every area whereby all of the flowers were chase engraved by hand. In many of the American made solid gold ladies pocket watches weve come across throughout the years this is one of the best and fanciest examples. The Lady Waltham 16 jewel movement is also one of the best calibers made by Waltham, and the case itself was also made by A. Condition-wise the watch runs strong but we cannot provide timekeeping guarantee as we have not had it serviced. Comes with the antique pocket watch and chain presentation case, box, as shown. Slides move up and down the 16 length, tassels are complete. Box is in excellent form, gold-embossed London etiquette inside. (pocket watch shown for ambiance, does not go with this set of chain and box). Very good condition throughout. The box is superb, likely c. 1830-50, silk velvet nap is lush and full, and gold-embossed beautifully. Very slight warp to front (it is wood beneath the cover and linings). Silk sating and velvet interior made to hold a watch 40mm. Measurements noted on photos. The one notation is that there ought to also be an anchor bar, I believe, hooked to the one section of larger chain, which would be inserted into a vest buttonhole. I have an extra one of those and will include it with this offering, but you will need to have a single chain link to attach it. I’m sorry I didn’t picture it. It does match and makes the watch chain functional in all respects. The watch clasp is excellent. Some parts are gold plated in 10k and 14k gold. The slender chain is not, but shows brightly. Made by Anthony Heckle of Liverpool in 1818 and hall-marked as such in Chester with the capital letter “A”… The plates are mercury fire gilded with a depth and brightness rarely seen and after 200 years are as bright as the day they were gilded. This process was banned years later after many workers died from mercury poisoning. The rack-lever movement confounded most experts who thought this frictional escapement could not possibly work well, never-the less they were proved wrong and the rack-lever enjoyed great success. A scarce rack-lever movement in wonderful ticking order and keeping decent time. Balance runs true with an “old cut” diamond end-stone and swings beautifully with a strong healthy tick. Huge 30 tooth escape wheel. Smooth winding with the chain safety stop work kicking in as it should. Flat three arm polished steel balance wheel. Matching hall-marks of course.. I can’t even find a minor dent on either case part. Inner case bezel shuts tight… Outer case bezel snaps shut and holds well but is a bit gappy.. Closing spring catch could have been riveted a little bit deeper into the case to draw the lid in a bit tighter. Some faded initials on the back. Nice clear bulls-eye crystal. A few minor scratch marks. Outer case is 51 m. In diameter excluding pendant and bow. Whole watch weighs in at a hefty 177 grams. Comes with the original key that I had with the watch 20 years ago. It’s a bit stretched so I’ll also include a modern key for winding to be on the safe side, don’t want the key slipping… Original key is fine for setting the hands.
