There are ten service slips stored in the rear of the outer case dating from the late 1800s. The watch is fully hallmarked on the inner case for Birmingham 1808 and with a makers mark of WR. The outer case has the same hallmarks. It comes with a silver Albert chain with the watch key and a George III coin attached. The diameter of the watch is 2 inches (5cm). The chain measures 16 inches (41cm). The total weight of the chain and watch are 197g. Condition The watch is in very good condition for its age. Beautiful verge pocket watch by James Markwick – eminent British watchmakers. The craftsmanship is excellent as you can expect from reputable watchmaker. The dial bears Lion and Unicorn symbolics – probably as sign of Supplier to the King status. He became member of Clockmakers company in 1692, Master of Clockmaker’s company in 1720, died in 1730. Watches in British Museum. Later partner with Robert Markham, who succeeded him using the trading name of Markwick Markham, which became famous for watches destined for the Turkish market. Quite unusually for British pair case watches, both cases bears serial number 3053 and outer is hallmarked by RB. The casemaker Richard Blundell registered this hallmark in 1682. Video will open in a new window. Condition The watch appears to be in good condition. Movement is nice and clean, appeared to be in good running condition and works in every position. Champleve silver dial is in good condition. Case is in good condition with some period wear. Diameter of outer case is 57mm, thickness is 33mm, weight is 147 gramms. Gold pocket watch, repousse pair cases, champleve dial – Kipling, London, 1727. Gold repousse pair cases, 50 mm. An early London verge pocket watch, in fine gold repousse pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Kipling, LONDON and numbered (1635). The movement is in very good original condition, and is running well. DIAL : Wonderful gold champleve dial, signed Kipling, LONDON. All in fine condition. Good earl;y 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1727, makers mark TP and movement serial number (1635). In reasonable condition but with some light bruises and slight compression around the band, and a short split to the band, just to the left of the hinge. Original bow and stem, though the stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine. OUTER CASE : A wonderful gold repousse pair case, decorated with a scene showing a winged cherub, a woman in the centre playing a lute, and a dog to the right, all under a tree. Animals, a bird and fish around the edge of the back, and fine scroll decoration to the bezel. In very good condition, with just some light wear to the high points, mainly to the central figure. One short crack on the inside of the bezel at the catch (this is where the gold band was joined to form the bezel). The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. William Kipling is listed in London between 1705 and 1737. The case maker is probably Thomas Potts of Fleet Street, London.
