LARGE SHAGREEN & SILVER PAIR CASE FRENCH VERGE FUSEE (WITH MOCK PENDULUM) POCKET WATCH. A 18th century Shagreen and Silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch. The outer Shagreen case with pin-work detail is finely decorated with a large Silver Fleur de lis French Coat of arms, the inner plain polished silver case (housing the movement) has European silver markings including the initials ALI. It has a champleve dial with Arabic numerals, the dial centre section depicts two birds and it has beetle & Poker hands. A very unusual movement with old style square pillars. A filigree cock-foot frame incorporating a Silver Tompion style disc regulator and a F. Rench bridge type silver balance cock. Engraved with an Angel figure. The cock is open at the bottom to reveal a mock pendulum which swings with the motion of the balance wheel. Below are the words “De Tyd”. It has a chain driven fusee and a verge escapement. The dial is signed Edward Neweren, London, disregarding the place name this pocket watch is most likely to be of French/European origin rather than English home grown. The outer case measures a large 55mm (approx 2) in diameter, the combined weight including movement is 102 grammes. Condition : The outer shagreen case is in very good condition without any splits or cracks, each and every one of the 26 pinwork are all intact. The inner silver case is also in good condition without any dents or dings. The movement is good strong running order, running the full length of the fusee chain without stopping and keeping to good time for a verge movement of this age. Both case covers open and close correctly with good strong hinges and both case cover latches work correctly. Its imperishable shagreen case and the accurate verge movement is a testament to the skills of its 18th century European makers and irrefutable. Very Early ¼ Hour Repeater Pocket Watch by Jodin in Fancy Silver Pair Case England; Jodin; Mans; Serial# 130; C. 1690 Complications: ¼ – hour repeater. 800 silver, 56mm, pair case feature floral, repousse and pierced decorations. DIAL: This white porcelain dial displays Roman numerals and Louis XIV hands. MOVT: This key-set movement with verge escapement is gilt with a full plate layout and is signed. C 3 (The case is in very good condition) D 3-57 (The dial is in very good condition, slightly restored) M 3 (The movement is in very good condition) R 9 (Rarity on a scale of #1 being very common to #10 being extremely rare) Both cases have elegant pierced designs with the outer case having a centered raised repousse motif on the back. Quarter Hour Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. This watch includes a reproduction of the correct size key, it is not the original. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Pair Case Higher end early verge fusee watches were often in a pair case. Pair case refers to when a pocket watch is placed within another case (nesting), therefore two cases. The outter protective case is often very decorative. There are also watches, such as those made for the Turkish Market, that had up to four cases, each nesting perfectly within each other and keeping the inner watch safe from damage. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Beautiful verge fusee watch in golden pair case. Diameter of outer case is 47mm, inner case is 41mm. Total weight is 91 grams, outer case weight is 24 grams. London hallmarks date it to 1763. The dial and movement are signed by Rayment in London. The Sibyl acts as a bridge between the worlds of the living and the dead. She shows Aeneas the entrance to the underworld whose entrance lay at the nearby crater of Avernus and teaches him what he needs to know about the dangers of their journey. Video will open in a new window. Condition Condition is generally fine. Dial is in good condition without visible defects. Movement is running in every position though I don’t guarantee time keeping. Outer case has some wear, with some losses of details. Inner case is generally ok, but there is some minor issues with springs to mention. The spring of outer case is later replacement. The spring that holds movement inside the case is a little too hard, it’s sometimes hard to pull off the movement. Nice watch, don’t miss it. Beautiful verge fusee watch in golden pair case. Diameter of outer case is 49mm, inner case is 41mm. Total weight is 112 grams, only outer case weight is 34 grams. London hallmarks date it to 1735. Pretty similar watch from 1730s is being kept in Ashmolean museum of Oxford, with almost identical repoussé scene, probably made from the same cast. It’s illustrated in the book by David Thomson, pp. In this book, the subject is identified as Antony & Cleopatra, most probably after drawing or even production of Augustin Heckel workshop. The scene is depicting the Banquet of Cleopatra , episode described by both Pliny’s’s Natural History and Plutarch’s Lives, in which Cleopatra takes an expensive pearl and dissolves it in her wine, prior to imbibing the drink. The episode depicts the spartan Roman warrior represented by Antony being seduced by the sensual opulence of the East, as exemplified by Cleopatra. The case is quality one, nice piece of British chasing. The dial and movement are signed by Abraham Blanchard in London. Not a much is known on this watchmaker. Baillie records Abraham Blanchard in London in 1744, that’s all. Watch is quite nice, the dial is made of solid gold, according fashion of this time. Many of these champlevé dials was later replaced with white enamel ones, nice to see good original one. Video will open in a new window. Condition Condition is quite ok.
