Antique 1826 Pair Case London Silver Verge Fusee Pocket Watch. Good quality, verge fusee movement. Key wound (not supplied) signed movement by J. Highly detailed balance cock, looks to be a very good quality movement. Looses around 55 mins over 24 hour bench test. Heavy weight Solid silver with London hallmarks dated 1826 good clear hallmarks. In good, well used condition, with some quite heavy wear & ageing as to be expected. A few very light scratches & very small dints typical with age & use. Its has a basic repair job to the bottom of the case. Door hinges good condition, no over opening. Case button good working order. Clean condition but still has some patita. In very good condition, with some light wear & tear with use. Light scratches as expected with age. It has the typical inner case wear to the bottom but nothing serious. Gold repousse pair cased pocket watch, verge – William West, London, 1769. Gold repousse pair cases, 48.5 mm. A London verge watch, in gold repousse pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced balance cock. Four square pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. West, London and numbered (2982). The movement is in good original condition, and is running well. DIAL : The white enamel dial is in very good condition, with just a few light scratches, and no repairs or hairlines. Fine gold beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : 22ct gold, hallmarked for London, 1769, makers mark IW. There is slight compression to the gold around the band, a few light bruises to the back and some bruises to the bezel. The stem has been reattached, but the stem and bow are in good condition and appear to be original. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : A fine quality 22ct gold pair case with repousse decoration showing a classical scene. In good condition with just a little wear to the high points of the repousse work. The hinge and catch are fine and the bezel snaps shut firmly. There is a William West recorded in London from about 1723 until his bankruptcy in 1776. William Bowtell, London, 54 mm, 22k gold Large pair case verge fusee 1718 almost mint condition. In almost mint condition. Case : 22k gold, pair case, smooth, large seven-piece outer hinge, case maker punch mark “WB”. English Hallmarks for London 1718. The case is in very good condition. Radial Roman Hours, Outer Arabic Minute Wreath. Blued original steel hands. Dial and hands are perfectly preserved. Movement : Full plate movement, verge escapement, fusee/chain, three-armed steel balance. Sawed and engraved coq with dolphins and foliage and grotesque head. Regulating disc with pointer in the form of a snake, slotted columns, pretension by worm screw, blued screws. The very clean movement runs like on the first day. According to the records of Brian Loomes, William Bowtell was still in training as a watchmaker in 1694. From 1703 to 1727 he was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company. See also Baillie p. PAIR CASED 18TH CENTURY SILVER VERGE FUSEE WATCH NO. 811 H, NICOLLS LONDON. A very rare watch that needs to have one hand added and a number 2 key. There is a cut out paper advertisement in the outer case that says Maker Meeksham. So, this is where the actual watchmaker H. You’re probably not going to run into very many of this case type, unless you have a very old watch that’s been handed down to you. In the early to mid-18th century, it was common for watches to be housed in “pair cases”. A pair-cased watch has an inner case which holds the actual movement of the watch (often a verge fusee), and an outer case which enclosed and protected the inner case. Since the inner case couldn’t be made dust-proof because of the key-holes for winding and/or setting, an outer case would provide additional protection from dust and dirt. There were even some triple-cased watches made during the same period! Early pair-cased verge fusee watches were often ornately decorated with pierced and chased gold-work as seen in the photos below. Silver pair cases, verge escapement – London, c1710. Silver pair cases, 56 mm. A large early verge, in silver pair cases and later dial. MOVEMENT : Good quality verge movement, fully signed and numbered. Large balance cock, wonderfully engraved and pierced with two birds and two masks. Four fine Egyptian pillars. All in good original condition and running well. Signed Vindemil, London and numbered 423. DIAL : Later white enamel dial (probably late 18thc or early 19thc), in reasonable condition with no repairs but four light hairlines radiating from the centre. Fancy gilt hands, the hour possibly repaired at the base. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark IG? The hinge and high dome bulls eye crystal are fine and the case closes correctly. The silver is in good condition with just the usual compression around the band. The bow is slightly distorted and the pendant is a brass replacement. OUTER CASE : Silver, with no makers marks visible. The silver is in good condition with just some very minor bruises. The hinge has one broken sleeve, but still holds the bezel correctly. A late 17th century London verge, with a beautiful wandering hour, sun & moon dial , in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely pierced balance cock and plate, four wonderful wide gate type pillars pierced with trailing foliage, and silver regulator disk. The balance cock table is beautifully engraved with two birds. Signed John Ewer fecit. In very good condition, and running. DIAL : A beautiful silver champleve wandering hour or retrograde dial, with central revolving disk, marking the day time hour with the sun, and the night time with the moon. Signed as the movement. There are a few very light scratches to the blue background of the disk, but generally all in fine condition. Excellent gilt minute hand, of the period, and probably original. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. The stem and bezel are slightly later replacements (mid 18th century). OUTER CASE : Fine silver outer, with no makers marks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge and catch are fine (though the button is worn) and the bezel closes correctly. John Ewer is listed as making in London in and around 1690. A maker of this name was also apprenticed to Luke Bird in 1687.
