Benson, London (several listings), early verge fusee pocket watch in original silver pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1770, case-makers incuse mark GH for Gyles Hooper at Gravel Street, Hatton Garden, whose mark was entered on October 27, 1763, baluster pillars, key-wind, key-set, original white enamel dial, later gilt hands, verge escapement, gilt movement with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, s#7731. Among the Bensons listed in this period are William or George, both of whom we know about through advertisements for lost watches in 1771 and 1786 respectively. Condition: Examined by yours truly, a specialist in antique watches since 1971. Runs well for briefly or longer in any position and then stops, needs overhaul, shows good escapement function while operating in spite of limited clearance below the cock, has replaced cock-foot screw requiring considerable torque to bring tight. One pillar-top, concealed beneath the balance cock, has sheared off along the plane of the through-pin, so someone filed a deep notch in the plate to allow a new taper-pin to be installed beneath the original. Plates otherwise show excellent gilding, with some light oxide on steel components. Dial has some clean repairs to edge chips from 4:30 to 7, scratches across the 1 numeral, no hairlines. Hands are fine condition replacements, mismatched, 19. The original outer case shows medium wear, very light scratches, a few light dents of dings. Button latch is good, the button worn flush. The original inner case shows less wear, hardly any dents or dings but some distortion at the pendant base which has now been soldered. Bow is secure but the through-hole of the pendant has considerable play from wear; good high domed bulls-eye glass crystal. Movement: In good running order, good balance motion, good escapement function, plates show excellent gilding, little oxide on steel components; later dial has hairlines and edge chip; plain hands with the hour very crudely made, not original; original outer case shows heavy wear, many fine scratches, one tiny dent and a few dings, remnant monogram detail; button latch functions, button sheared flush; original inner case shows slightly less wear, has broken bezel hinge and closure gap; bow & pendant later, extended for later style, made of nickel, lead soldered to inner; domed glass crystal is scratched. Up for bd are 399 grams of all gold filled cases, there are no RGP cases or plated, it is all filled. All crystals have been removed, nothing else. The outside of the case is marked Hamilton Watch – The Watch of Railroad Accuracy. The case is marked on the inside as well Hamilton Watches. Inside the case are 10 Hamilton display pocket watch cases. I did not clean anything or do anything to this case. Everything is exactly as I have found it. Each case has one bezel that is marked Hamilton. Four of the cases are missing crystals. All of the case except for one are missing bows. Three cases are missing stems and bows. A few of the cases have a bit of corrosion but it looks like it will clean off. There is a little bit of a gap on the inside of the case at the right hand side. Each spot for a case has a loose piece of velvet. The rest of the velvet is not loose it. I don’t know if the velvet was replaced at one time or that is just how it was made. Overall the outer case is in nice condition for its age. The locks on the front of the case are marked W&S Inc. The case measures approximately 15″x8.25″x1.25. Check out my other items.
