Vintage 1920s Waltham USA Dennison Moon Cased Gold Plated Full Hunter Pocket Watch. A lovely vintage full hunter gold plated Waltham pocket watch in working order and keeping good time. The case is stamped’Moon’ (please see more information about this below). The gold plated case is in good condition with faint marks in places, the gold has worn on the loop where a pocket watch chain attaches. When the winder is depressed you can open the full hunter door, the hinge is worn on one part so whilst the door is attached and opens fine (please view photo 12) it should be handled with care. The crystal, ceramic face and hands are all in excellent condition with no visible chips or cracks. It measures approx 50.20mm diameter by 13.20mm thick and weighs approx 112 grammes. Gold-filled or rolled gold plate is a composite material where sheets of gold are bonded by heat and pressure to a core of base metal such as nickel or brass. The thickness of the gold determines how long the item will last in normal use before the gold wears through and the base metal shows. Gold filled should be thicker and constitute at least 1/20th of the weight of the metal in the entire article, rolled gold plate must constitute at least 1/40th of the weight of the metal in the entire article. The layer of gold in gold filled or rolled gold plate items is much thicker than electroplated gold, and therefore longer wearing. Because this material is not solid gold it cannot be hallmarked. Initially an explanation of the process was engraved inside of Dennison cases, together with the expected lifetime of the gold plate in years, which was the length of time under normal wear that the gold covering was expected to last before it wore through and the base metal showed. On later cases this information was indicated only by one of three words. Sun with inside and outside layers of 14 carat gold, guaranteed for to wear for 25 years. Moon with inside and outside layers of 10 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 20 years. Star the layer on the outside of the case 9 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 10 years. The inside of the Star case, which of course was subject to less wear, was electroplated with a thin layer of gold for further economy. Dennison gold filled watch cases are very good quality and are often found in nearly new condition today. If the gold plate has not worn through, then the case looks just like a gold case, because of course you only see the surface which is gold, but the prices are much more reasonable than for a solid gold case. Why would someone pay more for a solid gold case when you can’t see the difference? Vintage Hamilton 910, Nice WGF Case. This Hamilton pocket watch is 12 size (case diamter 46 mm). The case is white gold filled with Art Deco style presentation engraving on the dust cover, plus owner’s initials on the back. No brass and only light wear. The Art Deco dial has some discoloration, mostly near the top, but still looks nice and has cool design work in the middle. The movement is a Grade 910 with 17 jewels and is adjusted. Movement condition is sparkling. Nice honest watch from about 1923. This watch runs and keeps reasonable time: within 5 minutes or LESS per day. Rolex pocket watch vintage gold filled case 1920′s. Features and technical details. Two tone gold and stainless/silver with large arabic numbers and filagree around numbers. Superb, Gentleman’s original Swiss Omega, high grade 15 jewel pocket watch with very unusual poker cards/gambling dial and a highly polished 14 carat (tested) gold filled (known in the UK as rolled gold) original Omega case. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic – a timepiece to grace any collection! Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, black dial (probably after-market) in mint condition – absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles. Depicts different suits of playing cards with the red Ace being number one following round to the King representing number 12. Red Arabic numbers forming the outer chapter ring (13 – 24). Large black sub dial with white Arabic numbers and white seconds chapters. This is signed clearly just above centre in white script; OMEGA. Finely cut, original bright blued steel, spade and whip hands which have red tips and red seconds hand all in straight, un-marked order. Original thick, slightly domed glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition showing just an absolute few, very tiny (micro) surface scratches under eyeglass only commensurate with age. The highly polished/extremely ornate (5.3cm diameter /7.4cm from top of bow to base), 14 carat (tested) gold filled, original Omega case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a very respectable 111.8 grams), robust and in wonderful condition – absolutely no indentations, very tiny bit of wear showing under eyeglass to front and back of stem only and just overall extremely light and fine little micro surface scratches (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with loose coins and other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 90+ years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The back cover and dust cover are also hinged at 6, both open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, again closing tightly and all three large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play. The back cover carries a slightly worn (pocket wear) engine turned decoration with a large, raised, un-engraved shield shaped cartouche to centre. Clearly stamped to the inside within a fancy circular shaped cartouche; OMEGA with their horseshoe trade symbol to centre and is numbered; J 3586821 16. The dust cover is beautifully and clearly stamped; OMEGA GRAND PRIX PARIS 1900 and carries five medal awards to centre. The inside of the dust cover carries very attractive’rising sun’ engine turned decoration and is again n. Umbered; J 3586821 16. The Swiss, stem wound and set, high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate, Omega lever movement is in absolutely superb order and has just been checked by my highly experienced watch maker. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel (did not want to stop for the camera showing the balance spring is in perfect beat) with brass balance screws and four red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), original bright blued steel overcoil balance spring which is true and’in the round’, large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone in a red gold, screwed in chaton setting, heavily engraved balance cock, micro whip regulator (which as mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position) and original highly polished steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plate in bold, fancy arched script; OMEGA. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Winds extremely smoothly and fully do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth! Hand set operates smoothly and correctly – the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely gold filled, original, totally un-worn large’pumpkin’ crown. Original, firm, totally un-worn gold filled horseshoe shaped bow. A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman’s Swiss Omega timepiece which was much loved and proudly worn and has been a loyal servant all of her 90+ years – she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
