Edward Peters, Sheffield, verge fusee pocket watch in original silver open-face pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1783, case-maker’s incuse mark “IL” in cameo (unknown), watch paper in case-back from “J Sermin, Sheffield, ” key-wind key-set, white enamel dial, verge escapement, gilt movement with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, s#167. Condition: Examined by yours truly, a specialist in antique watches since 1971. Movement: In good running order, good balance motion, good escapement function, plates show excellent gilding, little oxide on steel components; later dial has hairlines and edge chip; plain hands with the hour very crudely made, not original; original outer case shows heavy wear, many fine scratches, one tiny dent and a few dings, remnant monogram detail; button latch functions, button sheared flush; original inner case shows slightly less wear, has broken bezel hinge and closure gap; bow & pendant later, extended for later style, made of nickel, lead soldered to inner; domed glass crystal is scratched.
