This watch is a very large mens 18 size housed in a silver (nickel) open face display case. This watch is a true rarity as it is a private label piece marked The Railroader 17 Jewel Bunn. This piece is interesting as it should be the last of a run of 16 Jewel Bunns but is marked 17 Jewels. This makes this piece one of the very first 17 Jewel Bunns made as they were moving from 15 and 16 jewel to Bunns to 17 jewel Bunns at this point. Very few of these The Railroader pieces were made. One more element that makes this even more collectible is that it is two tone! What a watch, hard to find another Bunn this rare or should I say scarce. An awesome Bunn to add to your collection. The movement is in great condition as you can see. The Bunn grade is very sought after and was one of the highest grades of watches on offer from the Illinois Watch Company at the time. The watch is privately labelled to S. The watch has Ruby jewels in screwed down solid gold jewel settings and has solid gold balance screws. It also has gold inlaid engraving which is all still intact and in fantastic condition; and check out that incredibly detailed two tone damaskeening WOW! This is a railroad grade watch and is adjusted to temperature, positions and isochronism. The movements serial number is 1178400 making it 127 years old. The double sunk dial on this watch is in good presentable condition and is the correct dial for this movement. It has the correctly private labelled dial for S. This dial does have a few small and light hairlines and one chip but still is presentable and great that it is original. The case is a very nice and heavy nickel open face display case. The lids snap on well with no gaps at all as you can see in the photos. The watch is stem wound and the hands are lever set. The hands set very well and the watch currently runs well. Side winding Elgins and Walthams are not un-common… This watch came to me from a collector who had previously fitted two other movements because he thought this movement was wrong despite the hand setting lever aligning perfectly and the small case locating peg on the edge of the movement at the Roman numeral eleven also aligning perfectly and slotting into the hole in the case.. Luckily he kept the original movement. Fully serviced with a new “Elgin” main-spring and keeping very accurate time. Not the brightest of plates but this Elgin 11 jewel “work-horse” movement is mechanically perfect. Electronically timed and tested, gains 10 seconds a day face up… Loses 2 seconds a day face down with the regulator arm being dead center on the timing index plate. Under-sprung cut bi-metal balance wheel with timing screws. Winds smoothly, open the front lid and fully pull the hand setting lever out to set the time via the winding button. A “Bay State” imperial coin silver case.. Tiny ding on the bezel near the hinge and an even smaller one on the back lid in the area of the blank cartouche. Coin edges are still very sharp. Nice floral pattern on the back lid. All closures and hinges are excellent. Clear real mineral flat bevel edged crystal. Presentation inscription on the inner dust cover lid for 1894. Lovely blued steel original hands… Fancy second hand is not original but a good tight fit and perfect in size….. A large watch at 53 m. In diameter excluding pendant and bow. Weighs in at 138 grams.
