Pocket Watch Case

The London English Fusee Pocket Watch with Sterling Case is a beautifully crafted timepiece with a size 16 R. Wright & Co movement. Made in the United Kingdom, this pocket watch features a mechanical (manual) movement and a sterling case, adding a touch of elegance to any outfit. A very clean late model verge escapement pocket watch in sterling silver. The watch is ticking and the movement is very clean, it winds smoothly. However it only seems to run when laid face down or mostly face down. I wound it about 2/3 to 3/4 and it ran for about 20 h face down, the last time I checked it, at about 16 h, it was keeping excellent time (within 1 minute – of course I cannot guarantee that and accuracy would change with orientation). A competent watch maker should be able to address the issue of the watch only running face down. The fusee chain appears to be in good order. The case hallmarks (inner and outer match) dates this piece to 1865. Both the case and outer case are original – the case serial matches the movement serial. So, that is very late for a verge movement – if you want a verge in your collection for practical use, this one would be an excellent candidate if you can just get the orientation issue sorted out. The only other obvious issue is that the crystal is acrylic and very scuffed – it could be replaced or possibly polished. A domed crystal works well with the outer case design. The case and outer case open and close well, the hinges are good. It’s a key wind watch and the key is included. The movement is signed Hen. ^y Filtness (Henry Filtness) Rotherfield. Rotherfield is in Sussex, England, and there was a Henry Filtness there who was an inn keeper, farmer and coal merchant in the mid 1800s. My research indicates that his son moved to Australia in the mid 1800s. So, we can speculate that this was Henry the Inn Keeper’s watch, and that it came to Aus with his son. I’m not aware of any Rotherfield, or England generally, based watchmaker by the same name. The case is not monogrammed, although it is a Henry Griffin case. The movement features a hand pierced balance arm, with engraved grotesque face. The dial is plain faced enamel with roman numerals, and is in very good condition. See my other listings. The British Hallmark on the case is a Running Lion which indicates its made of Sterling Silver, the anchor mark indicates Birmingham manufacture location. The hallmark for the age is hard to decipher. I have pics of both the inside of the inner snap back case which holds the movement and the inside back of the outer case. View my last pic – its a closeup of the marks on the outer case. I posted pics to a Pocket Watch Facebook Group and one of the members suggested that its a C with two Vertical Bars through the middle – which would date it to 1826. Regardless it most likely dates to the 1820s – 1840s or there about time frame. The letter J H indicates the case maker – who I believe stands for Joseph Harris – Case Maker – The Butts, Coventry. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THIS ITEM WILL REQUIRE SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION TO BE ACCEPTED BY THE CARRIER. The diameter of the outer case measures approx 58mm or 2-1/4. The dial face is excellent albeit the minute hand is missing. The case is in real nice condition – natural toning / tarnish as you can see. The serial number stamped on the movement is No. The movement is wound with a key and the hands are set with a separate key as the square on the stem for adjustment is larger than the size for winding the movement. The keys that I used are not included in the sale. The watch is NON FUNCTIONAL – Please read the condition report as I have provided some details. The good thing is that the balance wheel spin freely and when I spin it – it spins freely. As noted the hour hand is absent. The hands are set with a key but I want to noted that the size of the square on the front cannon pinion is larger than the winding arbor on the back. The square appears worn. View the pics to assess. ONLY THROW OUT THE BOXES AND PACKAGING AFTER YOU HAVE INSPECTED THE ITEM OR ITEMS AND FIND NO DAMAGE other than what may be noted in the condition report or shown in the pics.
