Pocket Watch Case

This Illinois Sangamo Special RR grade watch was made in about 1925. I believe it to be a 17 size and to be an unmarked 60 hour motor barrel. It is in it’s original case. The dial is silvered metal and I believe it could also be original as I’ve read that these Sangamo Specials could be ordered with such. These dials are – I think – less common that enamel ones. The hands have some bends. The crystal is glass – it can come out when you open the front cover – though it doesn’t always. The movement is lever set. The watch winds, sets and runs well. I will check the timekeeping the next day or so. The case has some wear to the 14k gold filling – most noticeable on the pendant and bow but also around some of the edges of the covers and case. The back cover has a very small mark or indent near the center. The hinges are good and the covers open and close as they should. Running about 30sec fast a day so likely wants a clean/oil. Not only this watch is rare do to being a sixty hour signed movement but it is also rare because it is housed in a original and solid Sangamo Special 14 karat Green Gold Case. Movement serial number 4758916, made in 1926. It works well and keeps excellent time. Dial is glass enameled double sunk Montgomery style. One hairline at 26 minute mark and surface scratch at 1 o’clock. Diamond shape blued steel hands are 100% original and in great shape. Solid 14 karat green gold and original Sangamo Special. Hinges are very strong, only wear is on the bow and crown. Covers open and close perfectly. Here are the details. 3,693,030, circa 1920, 17 size, open face, 23 jewels, adjusted to temperature and 6 positions, Model 10, Grade Sangamo Special, large raised gold jewel settings, full exposed gold train, gold balance screws, bridge nickel plate, stem wind, lever set railroad-grade movement. This fine antique watch is in excellent working order, with a dead flat and true balance wheel motion that has a fine, wide arc and strong, steady beat. The movement is a smooth wind, starts right up on my 3rd wind with no effort, and lever sets as designed. The movement holds excellent time but has not been further regulated or adjusted! Appearance-wise this movement is looking great, and I regret that these photos do not quite do it full justice. It has bright, spotlessly clean winding wheels, brilliantly bright and clean bridge nickel plates, all of the eye-catching red engraving paint intact, spotless correct elongated regulator needle and whip, super pristine looking down inside, and running strong and true! Dial : Illinois “Blindman” style, 16 size, open face, double sunk enamel, ultra bold black Arabic numerals with surrounding “arrows-in” black five-minute-markers dial! This dial is in perfect condition, with nary a sign of any hairlines, chips, cracks, chaffing, stains or scratches!! Hands : Illinois 16 size, factory original (not doctored-up after-market) plum colored matching “whip” design. This fine set of hands are in excellent condition, entirely unbent and undamaged, with darn near 100% of the factory-original plum coloring still intact! Case : Star model 10K warm-toned rose gold fill, pendant set and slot right, screw-back-and-bezel model! This case is in fully serviceable condition. I have restored and detailed this case right down to the threads so you get the best looking and working case possible! The back and bezel thread up easily, screw on and off smoothly, and both seat tight. The correct original crown’s fluting is super crisp and distinct for a tight, sure grip, and it turns freely. The bow is also its correct original, shows zero brass or damage, and swings loose. The crystal is a brand new looking thick beveled mineral glass model with no issues. The case does show minimal wear, including light, even carrying wear, zero marrings or doodlings, zero brass anywhere detectable to the attractive rose gold finish, and absolutely, positively no sign of any dents, dings, dimples or depressions! I’ve owned this fine timepiece for 20-odd years and it has always run accurately and never failed to please and delight!!
