1890 Waltham Antique Pocket Watch Gold case, movement Ser#4356592 needs repair

This is an antique Waltham pocket watch, serial no. Research indicates it was made around the first half of 1890. There is a hallmark in the case that looks to be that of the American Waltham Co. It looks like an oval shape with AW over CO. My research, as you can see in the photos, shows that this hallmark would be on a solid gold case, whatever solid gold means. I cannot tell you if that means 10k or 18k unfortunately, only that it appears to be solid gold of some type. I find no other marks with the exception of the various jewelers marks scratched into the case, as they did back in the old days when servicing a watch. The case is marked R5417 on all three pieces. TW of the item is 51 grams. This watch is NOT in full working condition. It winds and you can set the time, and the movement ticks away just fine. The second hand goes around and seems to be reasonably accurate, but its minute and hour hands do not have any movement beyond that. When I first wound and set it, the minute hand (which is broken halfway), did seem to move for about 15 minutes, but then it stopped. The second hand continues to turn just fine. The spring that pops open the face is not working. Pressing the knob down releases the face and it opens fine, just not with the force of a spring anymore. Soooooo, in summation, the second hand works, the movement looks great and has been running fine for hours now, the case is PROBABLY gold, the face spring is broken, the minute hand is broken, and the hour and minutes seem to only work for a little bit before stopping. In the time its taken me to write this, post photos etc, the min/hour hands have begun moving again. Please see the photos for the best physical description I could give. See my store for many more vintage and NOS items. The item “1890 Waltham Antique Pocket Watch Gold case, movement Ser#4356592 needs repair” is in sale since Monday, July 1, 2019. From my mother’s estate. This watch was considered a luxury item. More photos can be found online at pocketwatchmuseum. I will send 1st class insured. There are some scratches on the reverse side of the case which can be seen in the upper left of the picture of the hinge. Following is from an appraisal. Signed on the top plate for “Benjamin Chadwick Liverpool” serial number 11320. Half plate, (if the fourth wheel as well as the escape and the balance all have a separate cock, it is known as a half plate, regardless of how much of the top plate is left), key wound, fusee with chain, the cut compensated balance with gold temperature screws and platinum? Quarter screws, helical blue steel hairspring, free-sprung with overcoils, diamond endstone, jewelled to the third, endstone to the escape. The brass detent foot planted in the pillar plate and fitted with an overlength steady pin. Spring detent, the brass escape wheel and detent of Earnshaw type. Plain with fixed dome and barrel edge to the band, gold joints, pendant with front cover release button, front cover engraved with garter strap surrounding blank cartouche. Case assayed in Chester (three sheaves and sword), 1873 (“k”), maker Hugh Green, 20 Pownall Square, Liverpool, registered 5th June 1865 (“HG” incuse). Pendant assayed in Birmingham (anchor), 1873 (“Y”), probably by John Johnson (listed as “Pendant Maker”), at 8 Mount Street, Chapel Fields, Coventry, (“JJ” in oval cartouche). Different marks on pendants do not necessarily indicate replacements; pendant making was a separate specialism and this is a commonly found discrepancy. The blue steel hands in spade style with gold colored seconds hand, the latter probably a replacement. The detent spring showing signs of a soldered repair next to the locking stone. Size is 53mm, not as previously stated. The item “1873 SILVER BENJAMIN CHADWICK CHRONOMETER HUNTER’S CASE NEEDS DETENT SPRING” is in sale since Thursday, April 18, 2019. 1911 ELGIN 14K GOLD 0S 15J LADIES POCKET WATCH, NEEDS SERVICE. Movement is fully wound, won. T wind, works very briefly then stops, balance staff appears to be ok. Will need at least a service or at worst a repair. Model 2, Grade 354, Class 116, 0S, 15J, stem set with date serial number 15680644. The 14k gold KEYSTONE case is 33mm in diameter with serial number 4960407, overall weight is approx 31.3 grams. Great dial, just needs a light clean. We are constantly adding to ever increasing range and have a large assortment of American Railroad Grade Pocket Watches. American Railroad Pocket watches. Were amongst the highest grade watches made, having been made for the railways makes them a great choice to use every day, mainly for their durability over time. Their lower production quantities and of course their high grade movements make them also a great gift or investment. A typical railroad’s requirements for a pocket watch in the early 20th century might include. Only American-made watches may be used (depending on availability of spare parts). Only open-faced dials, with the stem at 12 o. Minimum of 17 functional jewels in the movement. Size 16 or 18 only. Maximum variation of 30 seconds (approximately 4 seconds daily) per weekly check. Watch adjusted to at least five positions: Face up and face down (the positions a watch might commonly take when laid on a flat surface); then crown up, crown pointing left, and crown pointing right (the positions a watch might commonly take in a pocket). Occasionally a sixth position, crown pointing down, would be included. Adjusted for severe temperature variance and isochronism (variance in spring tension). Indication of time with bold legible Arabic numerals, outer minute division, second dial, heavy hands. Lever used to set the time (no risk of inadvertently setting the watch to an erroneous time, when winding the watch with the stem). Anti-magnetic protection (after the advent of diesel-electric locomotives). The minimum requirements were raised several times as watch-making technology progressed, and the watch companies produced newer, even more reliable models. By WW2, many railroads required watches that were of a much higher grade (as many as 23 jewels, for example) than those made to comply with the original 1891 standard. _gsrx_vers_634 GS 6.9.8 (634).
