Superb vintage BIRCH and GAYDON pocket Q alarm watch 45mm without crown I have here a beautiful pocket `Q` Silver alarm watch which was targeted at the WW1 military around 1915… Very high quality maker and a very sort after and stylish pocket/alarm watch…. With original leather travel case. This is mentioned in Wesolowski`s bible on Military Time pieces page 28 as it was almost certainly supplied to the military privately. The main spring barrel that powers the watch and second spring barrel that powers the alarm are wound by the same crown. Wind the crown clockwise to power the main spring and counter-clockwise to wind the second spring barrel which powers the alarm. The nail pin at the 11 position is depressed while turning the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to set the main hands for timekeeping. The nail pin at the 1 position is depressed while turning the crown counter-clockwise to set the alarm. In the 12 oclock sub dial, which is marked in 15 min increments, the hand will turn counter-clockwise until the desired time for the awakening chime is reached. After elapsed time and the set alarm time are reached the second spring barrel will automatically release and the alarm will chime until the second spring barrel has exhausted all its power reserve (about 25 seconds) and stop. The second spring barrel must be wound again for the alarm to chime for the next scheduled awakening. This is a genuine collectable which combines a compelling piece of history with functionality and beauty whilst being an excellent investment. 18 size 21 jewel hunting case lever-set Grade 943 pocketwatch. Rare fully marked example of this beautifully finished high grade railroad watch, movement is marked with “943″, “Adjusted 5 Positions”, and “Double Roller” on the barrel bridge. Watch is fronted by a double-sunk enamel Montgomery numeral dial with script signature and is housed in a beautifully engraved gold-filled Crescent Watch Case Co. Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Running and a beautiful movement with excellent bright color and luster. Regulator is shifted toward one side and I think likely this movement hasn’t seen a cleaning and oiling in some time. Montgomery dial is very nice with just a faint hairline at the 11 O’clock area and a small scratch near the outer edge outside the 16 to 17 minute numerals. Case is very attractive with an excellent in hand look and feel and with all engraving in sharp condition, but front lid has a file mark at its upper right and cuvette has a file mark at its left side presumably from someone testing for gold content. Front lid of case needs a small nudge of help in opening through the beginning of its motion before the liftspring takes it the rest of the way under its own power.
