We are constantly adding to our ever increasing range and have a large assortment of American Railroad Grade Pocket Watches. American Railroad Pocket watches. Were amongst the highest grade watches made, having been made for the railways makes them a great choice to use every day, mainly for their durability over time. Their lower production quantities and of course their high grade movements make them also a great gift or investment. A typical railroad’s requirements for a pocket watch in the early 20th century might include. Only American-made watches may be used (depending on availability of spare parts). Only open-faced dials, with the stem at 12 o. Minimum of 17 functional jewels in the movement. Size 16 or 18 only. Maximum variation of 30 seconds (approximately 4 seconds daily) per weekly check. Watch adjusted to at least five positions: Face up and face down (the positions a watch might commonly take when laid on a flat surface); then crown up, crown pointing left, and crown pointing right (the positions a watch might commonly take in a pocket). Occasionally a sixth position, crown pointing down, would be included. Adjusted for severe temperature variance and isochronism (variance in spring tension). Indication of time with bold legible Arabic numerals, outer minute division, second dial, heavy hands. Lever used to set the time (no risk of inadvertently setting the watch to an erroneous time, when winding the watch with the stem). Anti-magnetic protection (after the advent of diesel-electric locomotives). The minimum requirements were raised several times as watch-making technology progressed, and the watch companies produced newer, even more reliable models. By WW2, many railroads required watches that were of a much higher grade (as many as 23 jewels, for example) than those made to comply with the original 1891 standard. _gsrx_vers_625 GS 6.9.7 (625). A superb, smaller antique Georgian English, solid sterling silver (fully hallmarked) pair cased verge fusee pocket watch, no. 2141 by Tringham of London. With fully matching hallmarked cases, white porcelain dial with Roman numerals and gilt hands, wonderfully ornate movement cover with its original diamond end stone and bearing vines, plumes, flowers and a wheel device, and also with a number of service papers of the period. Its movement appears complete including its fusee chain but the chain needs re-attaching, so will need some attention to go. The balance does swing well so once that’s done it will probably be fine after a clean & service. Both cases are hallmarked London 1791 with the maker’s mark WD and the watch is in very good condition with tarnish, closure issues and denting to the outer case, and the dial bears one minuscule nick to 12.00 and a hairline to 7.00. It weighs 104 grams and its case diameter is 2 inches. The final photo shows it with a US penny (1 cent) coin for scale, which measures 19 mm / ¾ of an inch diameter. Hallmarked 1818 which would make it an early lever watch by a man who was early into lever watches. Movt #29424 I believe this to be the real deal as the workmanship is superb in every way. The word patent clearly displayed as well as the name Robt Roskell Liverpool. The hall marks are correct and matching. It is sophisticated enough it has a means by which the watch continues to run even while winding (maintaining power). It takes right off upon even winding it a little(caution wind counter clockwise). This watch is very collectible as it’s a nice English lever watch made at the transition from rack lever to lever making it a very early lever watch, As stated this watch winds sets and runs extremely well. Having good swing to the balance and runs without stopping to the end of the chain. A couple small dents in the outer case is about the only faults I can find. The enamel dial and gold hour and minute hands look original and perfect.. The bulls eye glass appropriately shows a little wear. There is 2 watch papers from various places and a blank piece of very old paper inside the outer case. Thank You and happy collecting. Adding to the description i found a list of serial numbers for this maker and it would put the movt at 1824 even though the case hallmarks are 1818.. I have no idea if makers fitted to the case or vice versa. Also this doesnt appear to be a rack lever but rather an english lever / Massey Lever watch.
