For your consideration is a NICE antique Illinois 24j 18s Bunn Special in a gold filled Philadelphia Watch Case Co. The lever-set movement has gold jewel settings and is marked: Bunn Special Springfield, Ill. Adjusted 1400496 24 Ruby Jewels Safety Pinion. The enamel dial is marked Illinois Watch Co. The dial has chips/cracks, and areas of repair. The inside of the case back is marked: Philadelphia Watch Case Co. Guaranteed Twenty Five Years 7388922. No dents or dings, just light scratches. The crystal is in good condition, just very light scratches. The movement will wind/set properly, and run when wound. This is a great find out of an estate for a collector! Bunn Special 16s Hunting Case. 16 size 21 jewel hunting case lever-set Bunn Special pocketwatch movement/dial/hands. Beautiful and rare high grade hunting case railroad watch, this movement style is listed with a total production of 700 made and is identified as a “Variant D” in Mike Chamelin’s Bunn Special book and is the final variety of hunting case Bunn Special that Illinois made. Movement is very nicely finished with ruby jewels in raised gold settings, gold balance screws, gold train wheels, mirror finish steelwork, and rayed pattern nickel damaskeening. Watch is fronted by its correct double-sunk enamel dial with Gothic numerals and Old English signature. Serial number is 4216302 which dates this movement to about 1923. Running and a beautiful movement with excellent color and luster. Movement lettering has some black color loss in areas which could be retouched, and larger winding wheel has some small bits of oxide to its perimeter. Dial is near perfect with only a small very light hairline below the seconds-bit at the 30 minute position. The rear side of the dial has been checked and it is a correct original Model 8 dial with unaltered feet at the 13, 39, and 58 minute positions; this is always very important to check as the hunting case lever-set Model 8 and 12 Illinois movements have unique dial feet positions and for one of these movements lacking its original dial a correct dial is very hard to come by. UP FOR SALE IS A REPLACEMENT SET OF 2 BURNISHERS. CASE AND WRENCH IS NOT INCLUDED. ONE SET OF BURNISHERS ARE COARSE THREAD AND THE OTHER SET HAS A FINE THREAD. I decided to make the burnishing tool out of aircraft aluminum. The only wrench available that would open up large enough to fit an 18 size pocket watch case was built poorly. Therefore I took the wrench apart and rebuilt it to be rock solid. After doing a lot of research on the 12 size 16 size and 18 size I have discovered that all of the American pocket watch cases are cut on an SAE thread. SAE means The Society of Automotive Engineers. The threads are cut on a 60 degree pitch. After going through all of my cases, The wrench will come with 2 different size burnishers. In order to determine what size burnisher you need to be using you need to place the burnisher directly on the thread. The burnisher that fits perfectly will not allow any daylight to shine through…… You may need to use an eyeloop to see this. When using this tool it is important that you do NOT force anything into place. You need to gradually and slowly turn the handle in order to close up the threads. You do NOT want to use a tap because you do not want to remove any metal. With the tool I made you want to re-form the Threads. You want to maintain the structural integrity of the threads. When the tool is in use put some machinist oil on the threads. This will help with the application. The COARSE thread Will work on most of your 16 size pocket watch cases.
