Antique Elgin Pocket Watch. This nice find is an antique Elgin Pocket Watch which is mounted in an early R&F solid gold case. The R&F case has a rare early 6925 serial number. The sparse case markings prompted an earlier owner to cut a small notch in the back outer cover (see close up photograph), but no sign of any other metal is seen, even using a 10X scope. No brassing is noted on the outside of the beautiful case, despite age appropriate surface wear, so the symbol on the inside of the back cover may have been their early gold composition mark. Mounted inside the case is an Elgin movement dating to circa 1891. It is an 11 jewel grade 94 size 6 unit that is lever set. The movement serial number is 4333162. The watch weighs 56.7 grams. The case measures 40.7mm in diameter and is 12.1mm thick. A chain is included with the watch and is shown in the last picture. It is gold filled, with some small areas of brassing visible when examined closely. It weighs 11.2 grams. The fob measures about 54 inches in total length. Regarding the gold content. This piece was early production of theirs before they adopted clear gold composition markings. I don’t think 9k would have been used at that time in America, as that is a English gold alloy (37.5% gold with the balance being other metals) – I have not seen that on any American pieces. Observations: The back cover closes properly with the correct alignment, but is not latching shut. Condition: The watch winds without difficulty and has been eager to run, keeping good time for several hours during our evaluation. The lever works properly, with the stem, to set the time. The watch has an unknown maintenance history, so is offered as-is without any guarantee of continued operation. We recommend that you have it oiled, and cleaned if necessary, at the earliest opportunity by a trained professional, as these are normal service items that are required on a regular basis. Physically, the watch is in very good condition. The case has some tiny bumps, but they are not really visible on the outside – being noticed instead by some tiny bumps on the inside surface. The face shows little wear and has a small hairline between the 7 and 8 o’clock positions. The movement is clean and in great shape. The crystal is shiny and free of any significant scratches. All pictures show the actual watch (and chain) that you will receive. Bottom line: An early Elgin Pocket Watch that looks like a strong runner, coupled with a rare early R&F solid gold case – a nice find for the serious collector.
