Nice mid-XVIII verge fusee pocket watch. Made by William Lloyd, London and bears serial number 2489. London hallmarks date inner case to 1766. Baille’s book mention watchmaker William Lloyd at London c. Outer case is made in repousse technique and decorated with most probable “The Continence of Scipio” scene. Movement is typical verge British movement of mid-XVIII. It features nice pierced and engraved balance cock, steel balance wheel, square baluster pillars, barrel with worm. Movement is in working condition. The dial seems to be in nice condition without visible flaws. Nice original hands, bull eye glass. Both cases has minor traces of soldering, but seems to be in decent condition, without wholes. Exception is the outer case opening button, but it works as it should. Outer case diameter is 50mm, height is 57mm, thickness is 27mm. Weight is 86 grams. The Continence of Scipio , is an episode recounted by Livy of the Roman general Scipio Africanus during his campaign in Spain during the Second Punic War. He refused a generous ransom for a young female prisoner, returning her to her fiance Allucius, who in return became a supporter of Rome. In recognition of his magnanimous treatment of a prisoner, he was taken as one of the prime examples of mercy during warfare in classical times. Interest in the story revived in the Renaissance and the episode figured widely thereafter in both the literary and figurative arts. Good collector item, don’t miss it.
