Auctiva’s FREE Scrolling Gallery will enhance your listings. If youre looking for a true antique wristwatch, this may be on your wrist soonan extra LARGE men’s 1896 Transitional Period timepiece that has made it through 120 years of history in very fine form. My favorite among favorite U. Watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company , a prolific American watch firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location as well, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. And Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin as two of the original organizers were P. Currier of Waltham fame. This works out to be 1-7/8 inches long by 1-5/8 inches wide, without the crown. In comparison, most WWI era wire lug American watches measure 38mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width, about a third smaller. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 117 grade, 6 size gold gilded mechanism, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. This watch is called a Transitional era watch as while the movement, dial, hands date to 1893, it was re-cased in between 1912 and 1918 (when this Silverode marked case was known to be made) as use as a wristwatch, quite likely for military use in WWI. This was quite common back then, as it became fashionable for men to wear wristwatches (and stop carrying pocket watches around) they would send a small pocket watch to the original factory or jeweler to be retrofitted. It is an important part of watch history and tells the story of the wristwatch as it grew in popularity during (and as a result) of WWI use by soldiers. Its original white porcelain enamel dial in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory in 1896 and without any flaws. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track, black Roman numerals, original blue steel hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and sweep original blue steel seconds hand. Signed ELGIN in fancy Gothic script and decorative border below the 12. The crystal is in mint condition, a new addition. The three-piece case is in excellent shape, made by the Philadelphia Watch Case Co. And a Silverode model, complete with wide, solid wire lugs that accommodate a 20mm wide strap, as fitted on it now. Despite its name, a Silverode case is composed of 54% copper, 45% nickel and 1% manganese. Other American firms made similar cases. Keystone made the Silveroid, Dueber had the Silverine and Fahys had the Silverore. The original, antique Onion-style silver metal winding crown is in excellent shape, operating as intended. Unlike modern watches this crown and stem are held inside the case with a case sleeve (also called stem sleeve). As such it is somewhat spring-loaded, meaning you press the crown IN slightly when winding up. Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings. Peeking inside I find a gold finished, Seven Jewel manual wind, lever escapement movement with nice blue steel screws and finely engraved damaskeening on the regulator bridge It is signed Elgin Natl Watch Co. Safety Pinion with a serial number of #6,659,330 – dating this watch to 1896 as per Elgin production records. The inside case lid is signed PHILADELPHIA WATCH CASE CO. This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and sets smoothly and keeps very good, accurate time , ready to be worn and enjoyed It is fitted on a new 20mm black oil leather strap with fold over ends and matching color buckle. An extra nice, extra BIG transitional period watch that is sure to attract attention on your wrist as it grows in value over time. Watch sizes: I provide exact case measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U. Quarter in one photo as a size reference. Draw the measurements on a piece of paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, mens vintage watches are noticeably smaller than oversized timepieces you see today. Prefer a brown strap instead of black? For most mens watches I can switch the color before mailing; just let me know. These charges are your responsibility. It will be corrected and quickly mailed back to you. If you like unique and collectible vintage or antique wristwatches, add me as one of your favorite sellers. I specialize in American and Swiss timepieces from the 1900s to 1970s. My selection changes weekly, and is comprised of manual wind and automatic watches from the following categories: WWI trench; WWII; military; fancy case, art nouveau; art deco; mid-century modern; stainless steel; sterling silver; white, yellow and rose gold; solid gold; platinum; and diamond, ruby and/or sapphire ladies cocktail watches.
