Edward Peters, Sheffield, verge fusee pocket watch in original silver open-face pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1783, case-maker’s incuse mark “IL” in cameo (unknown), watch paper in case-back from “J Sermin, Sheffield, ” key-wind key-set, white enamel dial, verge escapement, gilt movement with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, s#167. Condition: Examined by yours truly, a specialist in antique watches since 1971. Movement: In good running order, good balance motion, good escapement function, plates show excellent gilding, little oxide on steel components; later dial has hairlines and edge chip; plain hands with the hour very crudely made, not original; original outer case shows heavy wear, many fine scratches, one tiny dent and a few dings, remnant monogram detail; button latch functions, button sheared flush; original inner case shows slightly less wear, has broken bezel hinge and closure gap; bow & pendant later, extended for later style, made of nickel, lead soldered to inner; domed glass crystal is scratched. It was cleaned and oiled by master watchmaker. It works well and keeps great time. It is bright looking. Dial is glass enameled single sunk. It has a hairline at 32 minute mark, over all looks great. It is breath taking. Case empty weigh 23.8dwt(37Gr). Total weight of this watch is 45dwt(70Gr). Case is simply in mint condition. Covers open and close perfectly, hinges are very strong and bow is tight. Hands are gorgeous and in perfect condition, so is the glass crystal.
