The 3rd Panzer Division Skull and Crossbones was one of 38 divisions of the vafen the armed wing of the German Party that served alongside the Wehrmacht army during World War II without being formally part of it. Prior to achieving division status, the formation was known as Kampfgruppe (battlegroup) “Eicke”. Most of the division’s initial enlisted men were Totenkopfverbände (camp guards). Due to its insignia, it was sometimes referred to as the “Death’s Head Division”. The Battle of Kursk was a Second World War engagement between German and Soviet forces on the Eastern Front near Kursk (450 kilometres or 280 miles south-west of Moscow) in the Soviet Union during July and August 1943. The German offensive was code-named Operation Citadel (German: Unternehmen Zitadelle) and led to one of the largest armoured clashes in history, the Battle of Prokhorovka. The German offensive was countered by two Soviet counter-offensives, Operation Polkovodets Rumyantsev (Russian:) and Operation Kutuzov (Russian:). For the Germans, the battle represented the final strategic offensive they were able to mount in the Eastern Front. For the Soviet Union, the victory gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.
