IN 1945 MY COUSIN WAS IN PACIFIC FLYING ESCORT FOR B 29S (I THINK HE FLEW A P-51 MUSTANG) AND HE WAS ON IOU JIMA AND AT NIGHT , THEY WOULD TAKE THERE THINGS OFF THE PLANES SO THEY WOULD GET TAKEN. THIS IS THE WATCH HE USED AND HE HAD WITH HIM IN HIS TENT, WHEN HIS PLANE WAS DESTROYED BY JAPS THAT WERE STILL ON ISLAND. THIS WATCH IS A PART OF THAT HISTORY. IT RUN AND KEEPS TIME HAS SOME WEAR BUT NOT BAD, THE CACE STILL HAS FELT AND SPRINGS THAT ARE GOOD. IT WAS KEPT IN A TRUNK FOR A VERY LONG TIME. Presented is an all original WWII (1942) vintage Hamilton Grade 4992B with its interesting 24 hour dial, sharp. 800 silver open face military case, and great running movement. It was serviced about a year ago and is running great. It is marked Hamilton Watch Co. USA 4992B 22 Jewels Adj. And 6 Positions and bears the serial number 4C50881. The balance has great motion and the only thing I see is some minor oxydation on the winding wheels and regulator. The unique single sunk melamine 24 hour dial dial is in great condition with no issues that I can find. It features bold boxcar numbers with an inner 24 hour track and is signed “Hamilton” in block. Please note the red sweep second hand and small blued second hand are in sync. 800 silver case is in great shape as well, with no dents or dings, once again, no issues. Finally, I’d just like to add that it has an excellent, possibly original glass crystal. Neat 1 of a kind Hamilton 4992B. In fact, all of Hamilton’s production was dedicated to defense purposes. However, they did still produce some wrist watches using excess movements produced in the 1920′s. One of the war-related watches was a pocket watch with a central sweep second hand. The movement was based on the 21 jewel, 16 size 992B movement. However, an extra jewel was added to support the second hand pinion, so the movement got 22 jewels and was called the 4992B. The 4992B is known as a “Navigator’s Watch” as it was used by aviators to aid in navigation by the US Navy during the war. Here’s a couple of advertisements from WWII-era Life Magazines that featured the 4992B. You’ll often see 4992B’s in a case or a box that was intended to isolate it and protect it from shocks or accidental damage. If you look closely at the dial, you’ll see that it’s a 24 hour dial so it takes a full day for the hour hand to make a full rotation. 12:00 noon on a 24 hour dial looks like 6:00 on a 12-hour dial. The minute hand still makes it around the dial in one hour, so the ratio of the minute hand to the hour hand is modified using a different minute wheel and hour wheel ratio.
