Very nice little watch. Not my area of expertise but the watch might be gold fill? Crystal appears to be missing. Watch winds up well and will work for a moment or two but then stops. 1888 Waltham “Wm Ellery” Model 1873 11 jewel movement in solid 18K gold Hunting case. Starting with the case, beautiful engraving on the front and back. No dents or dings. The hallmark is stamped on the inside on the back of the case (see pictures above). All hinges and clasp work as they should. The watch is a stem wind and lever set. The lever will swing out to adjust the time. The single sunk enamel dial is near mint condition with no hairlines or chips, perfect glass crystal. BriefHistory: American Waltham Watch Company Including Serial Numbers and Production Dates. 1851- 1957 Waltham, Massachusetts. TheAmerican Waltham Watch Company had its beginnings in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The company was founded by David Davis, Aaron Dennison, and Mr. Their vision was to form a watch company that could producehigh-quality watches at a lower cost using interchangeable parts. Withfinancial backing from Samuel Curtis, the first watches were made in 1850, butproblems were encountered. They were exploring new ideas in watchmanufacturing, such as using jewels, making dials, and producing plates with ahigh-level of finish which required extensive tooling and resulted in greatfinancial burden on the company. They also found that even though they wereusing interchangeable parts, each watch was still unique and had its own set oferrors to be corrected. It took months to adjust the watches to the point wherethey were any better than other widely available timepieces. In1851, the factory building was completed and the company began doing businessunder the name American Horology Company. The first watchesproduced went to officials of the company, and it was not until 1853 that thefirst watches were offered for sale to the public. The name was changed to”Boston Watch Company” in September 1853, and the factory in Waltham, Massachusetts was built in October 1854. The movements produced here (serialnumbers 1001 – 5000) were signed “Dennison, Howard, & Davis, “C. It was reorganized as Appleton, Tracy & Co. Andwatches 5001 – 14,000 were produced. The first movements carried the Appleton, Tracy & Co. In January, 1859the Waltham Improvement Co. And the Appleton, Tracy & Co. Merged to formthe American Watch Company. In1860, as Abraham Lincoln was elected President and the country found itself inthe throes of the Civil War, the American Watch Company was faced with seriousfinancial problems. They were the first to gain independence from European watch providers in the New World. But more than that, they sought to provide a more accurate watch at a affordable price to the American Citizen. After beginning activity in Boston by the Boston Watch Co. 1853 1859, In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Co. And the Appleton, Tracy & Co. Merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Lincoln was elected president and the country was in Civil War, the American Watch Co. Was faced with serious problems. The next year, business came to a standstill. There seemed to be little hope of finding a market for watches, and bankruptcy again seemed close at hand. At this point it was decided to cut expenditures to the lowest possible figure and keep the factory in operation. American horology owes much to members of the Waltham Watch group such as Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster, and Woerd, who contributed much to its development and success. In early 1861, the name J. Watson appeared on model 1857 first run: nos. 23,601 to 24,300 total production 1200. The next model 1857 was the R. Robbins of which 2800 were made. The William Ellery marked: Em Ellery, (model 1857) was then introduced with the first serial number of 46,201. It was key wind and key set and has 7 to 15 jewels. A size 10 womens watch was made in July of 1861 with the first serial numbers of 44,201. It was marked Appleton, Tracy & Co gold balance, key wind and key set, ¾ plate, 13 to 15 jewels. Some were marked P. Bartlett and a 15 jewel was marked Appleton, Tracy & Co. A special model, 10 size, serial numbers of 45,801 to 46,200, is extremely rare. By 1857, 35,000,000 watches were produced, and the factories closed forever. The example presented in this listing is extremely rare. This is the original 18k Gold Case!
