Was founded in 1901 by Achilles Hirsch in La Chaux de Fonds, named after the invar material used in balance. Invar was invented in 1896 by Swiss physicist, Charles Edouard (acute on’E’) Guillaume, but he was only internationally recognized for the discovery in 1920 when he received the Nobel prize for physics, encouraged by the improvement in scientific instruments that the use of Invar had allowed. Invar has proved to be an incredibly useful alloy and is used where high dimensional stability is required, such as precision instruments, clocks, seismic creep indicators, TV shadow-mask frames, valves in engines, and antimagnetic watches. I have not so far mentioned the useful antimagnetic properties of Invar, but in combination with high dimensional stability, these make for an excellent material to be used in the manufacture of hair springs and certain other components in mechanical watches. Indeed, the bi-metallic balance in watches that had been the previous method of controlling accuracy for temperature variations could now be replaced by solid Invar. The pocket watch is a full hunter cased watch with a sterling silver case which is in excellent condition for age. The watch has the sought after design. Watch is highly collectable and I will completed a full service next week. The watch is very rare the watch has a sought after blue chaptering, with three subsidiary dials. Far left as you look at the watch there is the date , centre is the seconds and far right is the days in full. The dial is signed John Barrel Locle. The case also benefits from a push button release. The Watch Measures – 2.25 inches high x 1.85 inches wide x 0.65 inches deep Dial The clock has a 1.65 inch diameter enrolled dial with roman numerals Movement The pocket watch has a high quality original English movement. 1899 Hamilton Pocket Watch – Size 18- 17 Jewels – Heavy Case – Thick Glass Crystal. Most pocket watches are over 100 years old and have over 300 parts. Most are wound with a main spring. These hundred year old springs can break at anytime. Because of their age you must become familiar with their usage, so as not to damage them. I try to identify the specifics of each watch, using the Watch Guide Book, but this can be very difficult, as size and types of metals used are difficult to determine.
