Very nice British pair case verge fusee watch for Ottoman market, circa 1740s. Beautiful champleve silver dial is decorated with sun / moon and stars for night hours and day hours. Signed by Godfrie Poy and numbered. As the watch wasn’t intended for sale in England, it lacks British hallmarks. Godfrie Poy in London Britten in “Old clocks, watches and their makers” mentions Godfrie Poy, active from 1718 to 1750: A choice, small pull-repeating and alarum clock by him, said to have been made for George II when Prince of Wales… In the collection of Czar of Russia in Winter Palace St. Petersburg was a repeating watch by him, outer case set with emeralds and diamonds.. Baillie adds – A fine maker. Watches in Damiano collection, Dennison collection, Feill collection, NY University. Probably, regarding his Russian watch, this master was related to oriental markets. Condition Condition is quite good. Dial is in good condition with minor wear. Movement is running in every position, though I don’t guarantee time keeping. The case appears to be in good condition with common wear. Nice blued beetle and poker hands, mineral glass. Diameter of outer case is 550m, height is 60mm.
