Dumbell, Wolverhampton circa 1846. The watch has a sterling silver pair case. Matching hallmarks for Birmingham, 1846. Both cases in good condition with minor signs of wear. Some marks and light dents commensurate with age… The watch has an English verge fusee, chain driven movement. Engraved balance cock with grotesque face and regulator needle. Movement is signed J. The movement is working well and running strongly in all positions for the full length of the chain. The original white enamel dial is in good condition, a light hairline but no major damage. The watch measures approx 58mm across and weighs 158 grams. The movement has been removed from the case to photograph. All my watches are tested on a flat surface. Hallmarked 1818 which would make it an early lever watch by a man who was early into lever watches. Movt #29424 I believe this to be the real deal as the workmanship is superb in every way. The word patent clearly displayed as well as the name Robt Roskell Liverpool. The hall marks are correct and matching. It is sophisticated enough it has a means by which the watch continues to run even while winding (maintaining power). It takes right off upon even winding it a little(caution wind counter clockwise). This watch is very collectible as it’s a nice English lever watch made at the transition from rack lever to lever making it a very early lever watch, As stated this watch winds sets and runs extremely well. Having good swing to the balance and runs without stopping to the end of the chain. A couple small dents in the outer case is about the only faults I can find. The enamel dial and gold hour and minute hands look original and perfect.. The bulls eye glass appropriately shows a little wear. There is 2 watch papers from various places and a blank piece of very old paper inside the outer case. Thank You and happy collecting. Adding to the description i found a list of serial numbers for this maker and it would put the movt at 1824 even though the case hallmarks are 1818.. I have no idea if makers fitted to the case or vice versa. Also this doesnt appear to be a rack lever but rather an english lever / Massey Lever watch. DESCRIPTION : Robert Roskell, Liverpool, fusee with type II Massey crank roller escapement, 52mm, 14K gold tested original consular hunting case bearing Chester hallmarks, crowned “18″ stamp, date letter for 1829, casemakers’ marks “CJ” over “WG, ” the first unknown, the second perhaps William Griffiths of Liverpool, known to be working at this precise date, key-wind key-set, multicolor gold dial, Massey type II escapement with the roller jewel sandwiched between upper and lower rollers, 12-16 jewels, diamond end stone, gilt movement with plain balance cock, gilt locking dust-cap, s#42288. Gross weight of assembled watch 85.5 dwt (133.1 g). As with a number of Chester cases, the test result comes in below the pretended karat. CONDITION : Runs well upon winding but has not been serviced, timed or tested, good balance motion, good escapement function, plates show near mint gilding, hardly any oxide on steel components; dial excellent, minor scuffs in the stippled field around the numerals; hour and seconds hands near mint, replaced minute poorly fitted; original case shows medium wear, many fine scratches, no dents or dings, front cover with edge crack by hinge, engine-turned detail gone from back, later monogram deeply engraved in front and still quite crisp, highlight wear to carved borders and band; bow & pendant original, bow pivots freely and has central thinning at apex; good glass crystal.
