A beautiful mid 18th century silver Verge pocket watch hallmarked for London 1745. The watch was made during the reign of King George II in the same year as the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. The outer case is in good condition with no major dents and is engraved with the Initials’J. R’ encircled with an ear of maize, however it doesn’t snap shut as it should. The inner case is in good condition and snaps shut just fine. It is also engraved with The name’J. Rogers’ which matches the initials on the outer case. It is hallmarked for London in 1745. The movement itself was made by’J. Josephson’ and is beautifully engraved as well as having a unique White Porcelain dial with the name’Thomas, Minerds’ painted on it in place of numerals. I have examined and cleaned the watch and found it requires a new Balance spring in order for it to run however this is a cheap and easy fix. The watch weighs 82.68 grammes (2.91 Ounces) and the outer case measures 4.7 centimetres (1.85 inches) in circumference excluding the Bow and stem. Most of the gold pins are in place, small pieces as shown missing round front bezel. Shagreen is a form of sharkskin it was used to cover expensive watches. The size of the case with the watch size is 41 m. Case with the watch is Silver hallmarked London for 1771. DIAL white enamel is nice condition. The glass is very high nose mineral and clean and clear. The fire gilt movement look just like the day it left the work shop. The watch runs Time keeping Aprox + or – 2/3 minuets per hour, mask engraved and scroll pierced engraved broad balance cock, square pillars. Engraved on the back plate with the makers name. The watch will come with a key. Just great to have such an amazing and interesting watch that is as good as this one, and it just has every thing one could want on a fine verge watch, very hard to find a watch in this condition with all that it has going for it. These Japonesque Gun Metal cased watches are pretty rare and very attractive examples of the Aesthetic Movement. This one is of fairly standard pocket watch size at 54 m square approx. The case has a nice patina and very slight wear as shown but this has not taken away the detail of the Japanese hieroglyphics which decorate it. Inside is a high grade Swiss Lever movement which although of a low jewel nature, is extremely well made and clean. Despite this it does occasionally stop though. Don’t know the reason. As soon as one twists the watch in ones hand to set the balance wheel moving it ticks away merrily again with good balance amplitude. The pin hand set works perfectly as does the button at the bottom of the case which opens the back. Because the back is top hinged the watch will stand up as a bed side clock. Tiny flake of enamel is missing at the edge of the dial as shown but it is hidden beneath the bezel. Repeat strike works perfectly although first three hour strikes did seem to be a bit of a dull thud compared to the beautiful notes otherwise struck! Now though, even that mild fault seems to have disappeared. All in all, a lovely old watch circa 1880 to 1890 I would guess of rare form and very collectible as well as still being useable also. The silver repousse outer case is in good general condition which I think depicts a farrier shoeing a horse. The case hinge is tight and the covers meet flush. The catch spring has broken and the catch button missing so doesn’t lock. The inner case is in good general condition and hallmarked for London 1762/3 initials’C. The stem has been re-soldered at sometime past. The outer case measures 50mm in diameter and the inner case 41mm in diameter. The dial and hands are in good general condition. The glass high domed crystal has one small edge chip. The lovely decorative square pillar verge movement is in good general condition. It is signed’W Johnson London 1077′. It has a silvered balance cock and adjacent plates and has a decorative scroll to the end of the steel catch spring. The balance swings fine and the movement runs intermittently, it can run from a few minutes to a few hours so requires a service. Winds and sets fine. 1775 Silver Pair Case Square Pillar Verge Painted Dial Chatelaine Pocket Watch. Although signed Wilders London the bridge balance staff cock tends to tell a different story ie that this watch was probably made in Holland and is Dutch in origin , or made elsewhere on the continent for the Dutch market. The inner case though is London made and is hallmarked London 1775 while the original outer repousse case is, as is usual, unmarked (there are some small holes i n this caused by wear that you can see in the photos). It comes with its original silver key but this is too worn to use. I will supply a properly fitting key alongside the original one. The watch is in very nice condition otherwise goes well and still keeps good time. A lovely old item.
