935 SILVER NIELLO POCKET WATCH CASE PERRET & BERTHOUD LOCLE. 935 silver niello pocket watch case by Perret & Berthoud of Locle, featuring elaborate ivy and vine decoration, original blue cabochon crown, and untouched cartouche. A beautiful example of late 19th-century Swiss decorative silverwork. Dating to the late Victorian / Belle Époque period, this richly decorated Swiss pocket watch case was produced by Perret & Berthoud of Locle, one of Switzerland’s historic watchmaking centers. The exterior is adorned with intricate ivy, grapevine, and floral motifs executed in traditional niello work, a decorative technique in which engraved silver is filled with a dark metallic alloy to create striking contrast and depth. The resulting black-and-silver surface highlights the flowing botanical forms associated with the Art Nouveau movement and the decorative arts of the Belle Époque era. At the center rests an untouched cartouche framed by the surrounding niello decoration. The reverse features an additional polished reserve, also left unmonogrammed, a desirable detail as many surviving examples from the period were personalized. The original crown remains fitted with a deep blue cabochon terminal, an elegant decorative feature often found on higher-quality Swiss watch cases of the period. 935 Silver Marks. Swiss Hallmarks. French Berthoud Silver Verge Pocket Watch 1800. A rare early 19th century silver open faced verge continental French pocket watch. The watch was made by the Eminent watch maker Berthoud from Paris and is signed on the dial and the movement: Berthoud à Paris. This watch is in working order with the plus of recently coming back from the watchmaker. It is rare to find a Berthoud in such an excellent condition as this one. Berthoud was a famous and important French watch maker with his works on display in many museums ; its a privilege to have a watch by Berthoud. Dial: The watch has a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, outer Arabic minutes and nicely pierced gold hands. The dial is signed in the centre: “Berthoud à Paris”. The watch is key wound at the front and comes with an old watch key. The dial is in very good condition, many front wind dials suffer from key damage around the winding hole. This dial has no chips or damage. Case: The watch sits in a plain silver case which fits perfectly with the movement. The case has the stamp mark GAB with a crown above. Early French case marks are not my speciality, so not able to provide any further info on the case mark. The case measures 46mm in diameter. Movement: The full plate gilt fusee verge movement is in good working order and keeps to quite good time however I cannot guarantee perfection as it is a 219 year old plus antique watch. It has a finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator disk, plain round pillars between the plates.
