This Unitas 6498 is a Swiss-made mechanical manual wind movement that has been in production for decades. Originally designed for small hunter pocket watch cases, People often referred to as a “pocket watch movement” until Panerai incorporated it into their wristwatch line. You will find it in many diving models from various manufacturers. The Unitas 6498 is known for its robust nature and reliability. It’s measures16.5 lignes (36.6mm) across and 4.5mm deep. The movement’s size has influenced the trend towards larger watches, as watch cases grew to accommodate this sized caliber. The Unitas 6498 and its sibling, the 6497, differ in architecture, most notably in the different locations of the subsidiary seconds. The 6497′s small seconds are at 9 o’clock, opposite the crown, while the 6498′s small seconds are at 6 o’clock, with the crown at 3. Many brands have used Unitas including American brands Bulova and Hamilton and European flavors from Alpina to Zeno. Unitas merged with ETA and the Swatch Group, Ltd. Near perfect double sunk Montgomery dial. Lids snap open and close correctly mint blued hands. Watch case marked solid gold and gold filled. Couple of spots on on the winding wheel and also on regulator spring… Gilt movement and jewel screws… Fully marked including Dbl Roller.. Balance has good motion and is true in the flat… No idea when it was last serviced… Gold colored dial signed and with Arabic numerals.. Bit and a nice set of Open Moon hands…. 25 Year gold filled Santa Fe Watch Co case.. Covers screw on and the threads are very good.. Crown has a some smoothing… The watch comes with a chain, appears to be very period.. The case is marked Philadelphia 20 years and case has virtually no wear. All the engraving is still nice and crisp. Crystal is very nice with no scratches. Hands are nice with no rust. It has a beautiful double sunk dial which has no hairlines but there is a flea bite nick above the 12 which is covered by bezel. Serial number is 8401902 which dates to 1899. It has a diamond end stone and a gold train. It winds and sets and keeps time but I have no service record so it should be serviced. I wound up the watch and after 24 hours with the face of the watch up it was 30 seconds fast. This is one of Elgin? S best railroad watches and is in close to mint condition. It will be a long time before you get another chance to own a beautiful watch like this!!! This comes from an old Wichita estate, engraved with the name of Anna T. Immermeyer, who according to the 1930 Wichita Directory was a seamstress residing at 616 N.
