Pocket Watch Case

This is a antique verge fusee pair cased pocket watch from 1772. This is a nice square pillar watch, the fusee chain Is detached and the balance wheel needs some work. However this is a lovely clean movement and it is such a lovely size. The movement is signed by T. Betson London” number “3081. Betson was well known for making Pained cow horn watches of which this is a quintessential example. Overall this is a beautiful movement and the engraving on the balance cock is exceptional. This is a painted horn example which means the cow horn is made to look like tortoise shell. Then a layer of paper is placed under the horn, and that is the exotic pattern you can see coming though. The case is made of guilt metal then gold studs have been added to hold down the horn. Inside the outer case is a original watch paper, this is a nice part of the watches history and we know from looking at that, that the watch once lived on the Isle of Wight. In summary the outer case is in reasonable condition the only problem is a bit of horn is missing from the case but apart from that it in good condition, the case also closes well. The inner case is made of silver and has the London hallmark for 1772 overall the inner case is in good condition. However at some point in its life the handle has been soldered but it is now Secure. The dial, crystal and hands. The Hans are original and are made of pierced blued steel. The crystal is original and is still clear. Finally the dial is made of enamel and is a well used example of a late 18th century watch dial. Finally this is a lovely watch and would be a great part of anyone’s collection. Small antique silver pair cased verge pocket watch. The gilt fusee movement signed and dated 1816, numbered 656. We have just had the movement serviced, it is in good going order. Complete with winding key. White enamel dial with black Arabic numerals and steel hands, enclosed under a bulls eye, domed glass. The dial has some fine hairline marks which are not as visible, as in the picture showing it, the picture has been enhanced to illustrate this. Verge fusee movement with pierced and engraved balance cock, three armed undersprung balance, Bosley style regulator and cylindrical pillars. The outer case 52mm diameter and 22.5 thick. The dial and inner case are quite small – 38mm diameter dial and 44mm inner case. The inner and outer cases are both marked hallmarked London 1758. Lifting the dial reveals the stunning verge escapement fusee movement, marked Thomas Shilling. The watch does run but it could do with a service.
