Tourbillon-this expensive feature was originally designed to make the watch more accurate, but is now simply a demonstration of watchmaking virtuosity. In an ordinary watch the balance wheel oscillates at different rates, because of gravitational bias, when the watch is in different positions, causing inaccuracy. In a tourbillon, the balance wheel is mounted in a rotating cage so that it will experience all positions equally. The mechanism is usually exposed on the face to show it off. Verge Fusee with Chatelaine and Matching Outer Protectors Case Pocket Watch England; John Georg Buson; Mans; Circa: 1750 COMPLICATIONS: Early verge CASE: The sterling silver/nickel 10-size, 45mm, 5 ½ long, swing-out case features floral, barleycorn, geometric, repousse, and cherub decorations. DIAL: This white porcelain dial displays Roman numerals and spade hands. MOVT: This key-set movement with verge fusee escapement, is gilt, with a full plate layout, and is signed. This watch is a verge fusee pocket watch. Verge fusees were popular from the 1600s through the mid 1800s. Even when new, these watches were not exact time keepers; and now that the watch is at least over 200 years old, we do not guarantee that this watch will keep time. We do guarantee that the watch does run when wound and will run for a period of hours. A special fusee housed in an exciting chatelaine, with outer case. A great watch and collector item. Chatelaine Chatelaine refers to the ornamental clasp worn at a waist, attached to a belt or girdle, with a hook-plate from which the watch is suspended. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Full Plate A plate (or disc) that covers the works and supports the wheels pivots. There is a top plate, a bottom plate, half, and 3/4 plate. The top plate has the balance resting on it. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
