Lomogo, brand of Fabrique La Maisonette, 18K hunting minute-repeating chronograph pocket watch, elaborate case. Near mint overall condition, good running order, great sound, Mother-of-Pearl inlaid box with top-silk. Description: Lomogo, a brand of Fabrique La Maisonette, registered in 1910 by Maurice Woog of La Chaux-de-Fonds, large 18K yellow gold hunting-cased minute-repeating chronograph pocket watch, 54mm, elaborate case with raised decoration in front, monogram, engraved flowers, frosted field, gold cuvette with medallion display and features, a small 1929 presentation engraved at the base of the cuvette. The minute repeater is push activated and has spin-ball governor, both patents of C. Barbezat-Baillot of the same town, granted in the 1890′s. The single chronograph is activated by push at 2 o’clock, the single button starting, stopping and returning. The gilt movement has 17 jewels, the repeat train not jeweled in this type. To repeat, one depresses the button fully, which winds the repeat spring, and upon release the watch strikes the hour on the lower toned gong, double-strikes the quarter on two gongs, and finishes with the minute on the high gong, all via two hammers striking on two superimposed gongs. The assembled watch weighs 70.7 dwt (109.9 g). The watch comes in its original superb mahogany fitted box with inlay on top, inner top-silk with Lomogo brand beneath arranged medallions, representing awards the company may have accumulated at various expositions. The box has chamber beneath the watch with additional mainspring and crystal. Condition: Inspected and freshly lubricated by yours truly, a full-time watch specialist since 1971. Good running order, near mint mechanism, perfect chronograph and repeat functions, lovely clear tone. The dial has crescent-shaped hairline shown in the photo. Hands are near mint. The case has crisp mint looks with hardly any wear, but I grade at near mint owing to a few small dings to the back along with microfine scratches, typical of a watch normally displayed with the decorative side up. The box has stunning interior with mint silk and velvet, while the outside shows light wear, rubbing, and small formative split. The order of grading terms I use is as follows: Pristine – Mint – Excellent – Fine – Fair – Poor. In addition I add more detail, so one can properly interpret the photos. This listing is for a large French circa 1890 silver full hunting cased pocket watch. The watch measures 2 inches or 50 mm in diameter. The watch comes complete with a very elaborate watch fob chain ending in a wax seal. This “chain” measures 5 inches long. Well as you can see from the photographs the case is something to see. The entire case is silver with niello work. (Niello and it’s use is detailed below the description for ths watch). The front cover has a “KZ” monogram amongst foliage. The most interesting back cover shows a royal coat of arms. I have not been able to identify this coat of arms. It displays a crowned helm or helmet atop a shield containing only one thing, a large battle ax. Above the helmet another smaller battle ax descends on the royal helmet. Is this a Royal coat of arms or that of a king slayer? . The shield is surrounded by ivy. The inner dust cover is engraved “REMONTOIR SPIRAL BREGUET”. The movement is stem wind and pin set. Meaning you wind the watch from the stem. You set the time by pushing the small button down that is next to the winding stem and then move the winder. The dial is white porcelain with black Roman numerals and black steel hands. The chain is all silver with the exception of a gold plaque on one of the pieces that contains a monogram. Another piece has another helm with a crown. At the bottom is a wax seal which is silver with a rim of gold. The condition is excellent, the dial is immaculate. The only damage is a crack in the covering crystal lens. The case is tight. The watch runs but can definitely use a cleaning and service. Please look at many photos for more on the look of this pocket watch. Niello is made by fusing together silver, copper, and lead and then mixing the molten alloy with sulfur. The resulting black-coloured sulfides are powdered, and after the engraved metal, usually silver, has been moistened with a flux, some of the powder is spread on it and the metal strongly heated; the niello melts and runs into the engraved channels. The excess niello is then removed by scraping until the filled channels are clearly visible, and finally the surface is polished. The contrast of the black niello against the bright silver surface produces an attractive decorative effect. There is no reserve.
