Vintage 1920s Waltham USA Dennison Moon Cased Gold Plated Full Hunter Pocket Watch. A lovely vintage full hunter gold plated Waltham pocket watch in working order and keeping good time. The case is stamped’Moon’ (please see more information about this below). The gold plated case is in good condition with faint marks in places, the gold has worn on the loop where a pocket watch chain attaches. When the winder is depressed you can open the full hunter door, the hinge is worn on one part so whilst the door is attached and opens fine (please view photo 12) it should be handled with care. The crystal, ceramic face and hands are all in excellent condition with no visible chips or cracks. It measures approx 50.20mm diameter by 13.20mm thick and weighs approx 112 grammes. Gold-filled or rolled gold plate is a composite material where sheets of gold are bonded by heat and pressure to a core of base metal such as nickel or brass. The thickness of the gold determines how long the item will last in normal use before the gold wears through and the base metal shows. Gold filled should be thicker and constitute at least 1/20th of the weight of the metal in the entire article, rolled gold plate must constitute at least 1/40th of the weight of the metal in the entire article. The layer of gold in gold filled or rolled gold plate items is much thicker than electroplated gold, and therefore longer wearing. Because this material is not solid gold it cannot be hallmarked. Initially an explanation of the process was engraved inside of Dennison cases, together with the expected lifetime of the gold plate in years, which was the length of time under normal wear that the gold covering was expected to last before it wore through and the base metal showed. On later cases this information was indicated only by one of three words. Sun with inside and outside layers of 14 carat gold, guaranteed for to wear for 25 years. Moon with inside and outside layers of 10 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 20 years. Star the layer on the outside of the case 9 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 10 years. The inside of the Star case, which of course was subject to less wear, was electroplated with a thin layer of gold for further economy. Dennison gold filled watch cases are very good quality and are often found in nearly new condition today. If the gold plate has not worn through, then the case looks just like a gold case, because of course you only see the surface which is gold, but the prices are much more reasonable than for a solid gold case. Why would someone pay more for a solid gold case when you can’t see the difference? Large sized Waltham pocket watch in hallmarked sterling silver case which is hallmarked from Birmingham in the year 1913. Very minor faint hairline to the left and right of small seconds dial at 6 position, dent to case back at bottom on backside, the crystal when bezel is unscrewed comes out, there must be a technique to screwing back on and keeping the crystal in place, I do not have that technique! So it will come with crystal not in the bezel. But will be included. Measures 55mm in diameter. It is a seven (7) jewel key wind, key set movement. The movement serial number 4013, dates production to May 1857, using Waltham’s handwritten records (see picture). These 7 jewel movements rarely come up for sale because they were just a fraction of total production. It was fully serviced about a year ago and had a new mainspring installed at that time. It runs well and keeps good time. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged Boston Watch Co. Coin silver hunter case which is stamped B. 2490 and bears the Eagle Silver Hallmark. An uninitialed shield centers the front cover. The case is in good condition and appears to be original to the dial and movement. The front cover opens sharply when released and stops at 90 degrees as it should. The back cover opens to just past 90 degrees. There is a slight amount of play in the back covers as is typically expected with a case of this age. The front cover, cuvette and bezel hinges are all tight. The covers snap shut tight leaving no play or gaps. The bow has remained tight. The case shows normal, even pocket wear from use and polishing but there are not deep dents or scratches present. The watch measures 55mm (2 1/8″) wide X 79mm (3 1/16″) from the top of the bow to the base of the case X 19mm (3/4) thick. Overall, the case has aged nicely. The white porcelain unsunk dial is in excellent condition showing no hairlines or edge chips. The blued spade pointers and bright and crisp. The glass crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 7 jewel, Model 1857, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is super bright and crisp. It is signed “Waltham – Dennison Howard & Davis”. The serial number of 4013 dates production of this piece back to May 1857 (see accompanying photo of Waltham’s hand written records above). The movement shows only minor service marks and has a very attractive luster. It has been serviced within the past year and had a new mainspring installed. It winds and sets fine and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. These DHD timepieces are among the earliest produced by Waltham.
