18th century english pocket watch. Signed key wind Movement by benjamin sidey, London, model no. Dial: later white enamel, with black Roman numerals, 5 minute markers, fleur-de-lis hands. Inner case: plain polished Gilt Sterling, bearing english hallmarks for London (leopard’s head), sterling (lion), maker IW, date letter O for 1771, measures 41mm, has glass crystal. (there is a piece of paper that says Benj sidey 1769 inside the outer case, that date may be for the movement). Outer case: ornate gilt silver, featuring repousse mythological scene with two figures within a scrolling framework, measures 47.5mm. As is condition, no key, we don’t know if it works, the outer case has some wear to the gilt finish on the high points, was in storage for many years, previously owned, from the collection of a local pocket watch collector. Silver pair case in nice condition, minimal sign of usage. Outer case back side have some tiny dent marks. Hinges ok, all lids open and shut well. Opening button missing but case open and shut fine. Non original unique ottoman turkish market numeral, solid silver dial custom made by renowned silver maker. Movement nice and clean condition. Watch newly serviced and working very well. There are some scratches on the reverse side of the case which can be seen in the upper left of the picture of the hinge. Following is from an appraisal. Signed on the top plate for “Benjamin Chadwick Liverpool” serial number 11320. Half plate, (if the fourth wheel as well as the escape and the balance all have a separate cock, it is known as a half plate, regardless of how much of the top plate is left), key wound, fusee with chain, the cut compensated balance with gold temperature screws and platinum? Quarter screws, helical blue steel hairspring, free-sprung with overcoils, diamond endstone, jewelled to the third, endstone to the escape. The brass detent foot planted in the pillar plate and fitted with an overlength steady pin. Spring detent, the brass escape wheel and detent of Earnshaw type. Plain with fixed dome and barrel edge to the band, gold joints, pendant with front cover release button, front cover engraved with garter strap surrounding blank cartouche. Case assayed in Chester (three sheaves and sword), 1873 (“k”), maker Hugh Green, 20 Pownall Square, Liverpool, registered 5th June 1865 (“HG” incuse). Pendant assayed in Birmingham (anchor), 1873 (“Y”), probably by John Johnson (listed as “Pendant Maker”), at 8 Mount Street, Chapel Fields, Coventry, (“JJ” in oval cartouche). Different marks on pendants do not necessarily indicate replacements; pendant making was a separate specialism and this is a commonly found discrepancy. The blue steel hands in spade style with gold colored seconds hand, the latter probably a replacement. The detent spring showing signs of a soldered repair next to the locking stone. Antique 1770s Benjamin Barber London Fusse Pocket Watch & Persian Jeweled Case.. The outer case on this 18. Century English Fusse Pocket Watch was made for the Arabic or Persian market. The outer case which is not silver, it was made in the Middle East to hold the 18. Century Silver Fusse Pocket Watch. This case is decorated with thirteen cabochon glass jewelsand on the inside is a piece of paper with Arabic writing. The 2 ½ diameter case still closes, however there is some roughness to the back. Century English Pocket Watch is in very good condition and measures 2 in diameter. It retains its original bubble crystal, enameled face and blue steeled hands. If you look closely you will see that there are Arabic numbers around the outside edge. There also are unusual triangular markings. Some of these are doubled, some are pointing in different directions and there is a large zero where the number five would go. The silver case is clearly hallmarked with the London mark and the date letter 1777. We couldn’t find the exact makers mark, but we believe it was made John Robins. This silver case has a couple of very slight dings, but overall it is in very good original condition. Marked on the inside Ben. Barber London 2303 this 18. Century Fusse Watch was made by Benjamin Barber who was an 18. At first I thought the chain was missing, however I was able to wind this watch and not only is the chain present, but I have been able to keep this watch running for short periods of time. I guarantee with a proper cleaning and a slight adjustment or two this 18. Century Persian Pocket Watch will work once again. The only problem with this watch is a hairline crack on the right hand edge of the face.. There is no reserve on this 18.
