Silver pair cased verge pocket watch, mock pendulum – London, c1700. Silver pair cases, 57.25 mm. Mock pendulum verge movement. A large London verge, with fine and rare mock pendulum movement. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock and plate, engraved regulator disk and four square pillars. The balance cock table is cut out to reveal a mock pendulum bob, which is attached to the 2 spoke balance wheel. In exceptionally good complete condition, with the the gilding still bright, and the movement running well. DIAL : Fine, original, silver champleve dial, signed in the centre Patrick, London. All in good condition with no excessive rubbing or wear. Nice original early 18th century blued steel hands. INNER CASE : Silver with makers mark rubbed. Damage around the neck, where the pendant has been replaced, and the inside strengthened. The hinge has been repaired on the bezel, and the rim of the case is slightly distorted. The high dome crystal has no chips or cracks, but surface scratches. However the bezel does snap shut securely. OUTER CASE : Silver , with no marks. Excellent condition throughout, with just some tiny bruises. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine, and the case snaps shut correctly. The inner case is slightly distorted so is not a perfect fit for the movement or outer case. It is possibly a replacement case, though the outer is probably original. Both are of the correct period for the movement. The inner case requires some repair and when strengthened and shaped correctly will provide a better fit for both movement and outer. A good early London verge with original champleve calendar dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced winged balance cock, showing birds and a mask at the neck. Four tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. MARSH, LONDON and numbered (2538). The movement and calendar are both working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with calendar aperture, in very good condition. Nice original 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks. In quite good condition, though the pendant has been reattached and reinforced on the inside. However the pendant and bow appear to be original (of the correct simple style for c1700). There is a small section of the inner rim (about 10 mm) broken off the inner rim at 7 and a couple of old repairs. The hinge is worn, but complete. The high dome crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with large square hinge (7 sleeves). Again with no hallmarks. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. There are a couple of old repairs to the bezel and back, visible on the inside only, and some small bruises throughout. Large silver regulator disk and four Egyptian pillars. All in good original condition and running well. DIAL : Silver champleve dial in very good condition. Later hands, the hour repaired at the base. INNER CASE : Silver, makers mark B, but no hallmarks. In good condition, though the stem and bow are later so have been reattached. The hinge is a little worn so the bezel doesnt snap shut tightly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is scratched and worn, but no chips. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, again with no hallmarks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. There are a few light bruises to the back, and an old repair at the neck (only visible from the inside), but generally in quite good condition. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot and engraved mask. Four crested Egyptian pillars and large silver regulator disk. In good condition and working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, in very good condition. Signed CLEETER, LONDON on the central disc, below a winged cherub and two birds to the sides. Good early 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks, but makers mark RB. In good condition, though the pendant has been reattached and the hinge sleeves are worn (one broken). However the hinge is still strong and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal has just one small chip, right on the bezel at 9. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with matching makers mark to the inner. In good condition throughout, with just a few very small dents and a short slit at the stem. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. William Cleeter is listed in London from 1700, and in the Clockmakers Company in 1709. The case maker is probably Richard Blundell. Running well, and in good condition. DIAL : A fine silver champleve dial, in excellent condition. Signed WOOD, NAILSWORTH on the central disc. Good 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with worn makers mark (possible IS under a coronet). The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with no hallmarks. Again in good condition. The catch is complete and the case snaps shut correctly, though the catch button is dented.
