Gold pocket watch, repousse pair cases, champleve dial – Kipling, London, 1727. Gold repousse pair cases, 50 mm. An early London verge pocket watch, in fine gold repousse pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Kipling, LONDON and numbered (1635). The movement is in very good original condition, and is running well. DIAL : Wonderful gold champleve dial, signed Kipling, LONDON. All in fine condition. Good earl;y 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1727, makers mark TP and movement serial number (1635). In reasonable condition but with some light bruises and slight compression around the band, and a short split to the band, just to the left of the hinge. Original bow and stem, though the stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine. OUTER CASE : A wonderful gold repousse pair case, decorated with a scene showing a winged cherub, a woman in the centre playing a lute, and a dog to the right, all under a tree. Animals, a bird and fish around the edge of the back, and fine scroll decoration to the bezel. In very good condition, with just some light wear to the high points, mainly to the central figure. One short crack on the inside of the bezel at the catch (this is where the gold band was joined to form the bezel). The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. William Kipling is listed in London between 1705 and 1737. The case maker is probably Thomas Potts of Fleet Street, London. Grade: 7.5/10 – Very nice 105 year-old piece that runs but needs service. Case: 31mm (35mm w/crown), Ore Silver “Fahys”. Dial: Original Silvered dial with heavy patina lume numerals; w/Arabic hour markers. Crystal: NOS Acrylic high-dome. Movement: Buren 15 Jewel, 3 ADJ, Non-Magnetic. Band: 16mm NATO strap. Signed: Signed “Imperial” on dial and movement. This Watch has not been serviced. Winds smoothly, and sets with some resistance, seems to run about 12-18 hours but not timed for accuracy. Assume complete service needed if you plan to use for regular wear. Original Fahy’s Size 0 Ore Silver case and crown is very clean with only minor wear marks to rear and no major dings or dents. Original 12 hour military style numeral dial has strong patina and a one visible scratch as shown in enlarged photos – lettering is crisp and clear. Lume is present but no longer glows. Lume still present on hour hand. Very nice original hands. New acrylic crystal in place. New NATO strap mates beautifully with the well-styled case. The watch was recently serviced, running STRONG and keeping excellent time. Brief History: American Waltham Watch Company. The American Waltham watch factory on the banks of the Charles River. The American Waltham Watch Company had its beginnings in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The company was founded by David Davis, Aaron Dennison, and Edward Howard. Their vision was to form a watch company that could produce high-quality watches at a lower cost using interchangeable parts. With financial backing from Samuel Curtis, of small-arms manufacturing fame, the watch production began in 1851, and the first small group of watches were finished in late 1852. The first watches produced went to officials of the company, and it was not until 1853 that the first watches were offered for sale to the public. Problems were encountered with the new production methods. The company was exploring innovative new ideas in watch manufacturing, such as using jewels, making enamel dials, and producing plates with a high-level of finish which required extensive tooling and resulted in a great financial burden. They also found that even though they were using interchangeable parts, each watch was still unique and had its own set of errors to be corrected. It took months to adjust the watches to the point where they were any better than other widely available timepieces. Customer Department at the Waltham Watch Company.
