18 size 21 jewel hunting case lever-set Paillard Non-Magnetic Watch Co. Very attractive high grade watch with non-magnetic alloy balance wheel and hairspring, exact production quantities are unknown but 21 jewel and higher Illinois non-magnetic watches are rare and were only made in small runs for a few years at the end of the 19th century to beginning of the 20th. Movement is a Bunn Special grade private label and is very nicely finished with gold jewel settings, bright spotted pattern nickel damaskeen, and an attractive gold colored inlay to the barrel bridge signature that is only found on the higher grades of Paillard movements. Watch is fronted by its original double-sunk enamel dial with fancy Roman numerals and is housed in a 25 year gold-filled Fahys case which appears to be likely its original. Movement serial number is 1256432 which dates this watch to about 1895. Running with a somewhat sluggish balance action and a tick that sounds a bit out of beat, but watch did keep fairly reasonable time (lost about a minute) over the last 24 hours on my desk. Beautiful movement with good color and luster, far better than most examples of this watch I’ve seen which tend to take on a cloudy whitish toning to their plates. Dial is superb with no flaws. Case is evenly worn with reduced engraving detail, mild bits of wear to brass in a few areas, a slight compression type dent at the center of the front, and the front lid opens a bit wide of 90 degrees as seen from side view in the final photo. George III Silver Pair Cased Pocket Verge Watch By Thomas Taylor With Albert Chain A very handsome and heavy silver pair-cased pocket watch with a silver Albert chain. The watch has a finely pierced watch cock and engraved back plate. It has a verge movement by Thomas Taylor of London. The dial is white with black numerals and golden hands. There are ten service slips stored in the rear of the outer case dating from the late 1800s. The watch is fully hallmarked on the inner case for Birmingham 1808 and with a makers mark of WR. The outer case has the same hallmarks. It comes with a silver Albert chain with the watch key and a George III coin attached. The silver chain is marked but not dated and is probably later than the watch. Dimensions The outer case has a diameter of 2 ¼ inches (5.7cm) and a depth of ¾ of an inch (2cm). The diameter of the watch is 2 inches (5cm). The chain measures 16 inches (41cm). The total weight of the chain and watch are 197g. Condition The watch is in very good condition for its age. Both the inner and outer case are slightly worn as to be expected but are free from dents. The dial has some hairline cracks and a small chip. The crystal is quite worn but free from chips and cracks. The watch runs smoothly when placed on its back or front but stops when stood upright so it will need a service. 1919 by the serial number. Missing the crystal, the back case is hard to screw all the way on, seems like someone had pried the back off at one time. Doesn’t run, seems to be the spring on the wheel.
